Optiplex 3020 SMF hightest possible resolution for screen ?

I have a Dell Optiplex 3020 SMF, standard built-in graphics card (October 2015)

So far I used two monitors

I want to replace these by one wide screen monitor.

Can I use a monitor with screen resolutions of 2.560 Wide x 1.440 High pixels, and 3.840 x 2.160 ?

4k  3840 x 2160  is not an option.

You need a real GPU for that.

1080P (1920 × 1080) @ 60 Hz or 720P 1280×720 @ 60 Hz via VGA is possible.

2048 × 1536  is max for VGA

VGA does NOT SUPPORT 4K EVER.

According to the manual, the 3020 SFF has one PCI-e x16 slot which is typically used for a video card.   Micro has No Slots so this is not an option. The system comes with integrated INTEL HD 4000 video and can be ordered with either AMD HD8570 or HD8490 video card.

Optiplex 3020 Small Form Factor (Oct 2015)

If I would connect a Samsung WQHD (2560 x 1440) QLED screen, will it display anything?

The VGA card is at the max 2048 x 1536 pixels (x 4/3 ratio).

If it would display anything,

- how many pixels will be used: 2048 x 1440 pixels (WQHD limited in height to 1440 pixels) or 1920 x 1440 pixels (height-limit plus 4/3 ratio imposed)

- will it display black area's on the left and right of the screen (unused pixel space) or will the image be stretched horizontally over the full with of the physical screen causing distortion (a square appearing as a flattened rectangle)
