Dell R610 RAM configuration
Dear all,
we currently own a Dell R610 (dual Xeon E5620) with a total of 16GB RAM consisting of 8 x 2GB.
We are planning to double the memory to 32 GB.
What would be the best RAM configuration? Taking all the existing RAM out and replacing it with 2x 16GB? (one module in slot A1 and the other one in slot B1).
Should we go for low-voltage RAM, e.g. Kingston ValueRAM KVR13LR9D4/16
Or do you have any better suggestion?
Thanks in advance!
Best regards
Oliver

Sorry I misread your initial post as 2X8GB not 8X2GB. In that case. 2X16GB is the best option to get to 32GB.

Hi OliverTe,
You can do that and go with 2X16GB or you can add 2 more 8GB sticks and have two dimms per channel. They both will perform the same. If you do replace the memory low voltage dimms would use less power overall so it would be helpful.

Hi Josh,
thanks for your kind reply!
Currently there are 8x 2GB dimms. 4 for CPU A, and 4 for CPU B. According to www.dell.com/.../server-pedge-installing-upgrading-memory-11g.pdf the DIMMs must be evenly arranged, so I assume that the current configuration is (R610 has 3 channels with 2 banks for each CPU):
[A1] [A4] [A2] [A5] [A3] [A6] -- [B6] [B3] [B5] [B2] [B4] [B1]
[2GB] [2GB] [2GB] [2GB] [empy] [empty] -- [empty] [empty] [2GB] [2GB] [2GB] [2GB]
Open speaking, I dont see any solution to fulfill the requirements stated in the PDF for a balanced configuration with following your advice to add 2x 8GB dimms.
Hope you can help/clarify this issue to me. Thanks! :-)

How many of each DIMM are you installing? Is it just a single processor? The memory channels have to match. In addition the memory have to have the same geometry, either X4 or X8 DIMMs or it will not use all of the memory and possibly not post.
ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_ser_stor_net/esuprt_poweredge/poweredge-r610_Owner%27s%20Manual2_en-us.pdf
page 119 shows valid the memory configurations.

Hi,
I currently have a Dell R610 server with 1GB * 4 = 4GB
Planning to add another 8GB ( 4GB *2 ). Can we still use the existing 4GB to make the total to 12GB ?
Is this memory configuration supported ?
PL. suggest the best configuration
