Dell poweredge 1600sc memory upgrade

Is the ram in this machine really only upgradable to 4 gig? Why so little. The machine seems like such a powerhouse.

I know that it is ECC. So can I add NON-ECC memory and put more in it?

This machine was given to me. And don't need to use it as a server. I was just wanting to use it as a regular computer. Or should I just sell it to someone who needs a server?

4GB is the max for the 1600SC. Also none of the Dell servers support using NON-ECC dimms. As far as using it for a workstation, it is possible. The issues you will have is loading a Workstation OS on a server, as they are not officially supported, but you can generally use the Windows Server 2003 drivers for loading XP/Vista and then 2008 for Win 7.

Let me know how it goes.

Big and bulky does not a powerhouse make :)

The PowerEdge 1600SC uses an off-the-wall Broadcom chipset, called the ServerWorks GC-SL, which is limited to 4GB ... that's the "why so little".  The SC servers were Dell's low-end/budget line.

Non-ECC memory will not work - another restriction of the chipset ... and of the BIOS.

You can use it as a non-server, but you will just need to adhere to the limitations and restrictions that it has.

What RAMs exactly Poweredge 1600sc can handle?

Will the motherboard support 2GB PC-2100 DDR-266 ?

From what I could figure out from the Internet, it supports 4x1gb, but nothing about 2gb sticks.

I have 3x512mb RAM (2xPC2100+1xPC2700) and want to add more into the remaining slot.

So, before buying 2GB memory stick I would like to be sure that the motherboard can accommodate 512mb+512mb+512mb+2048mb = 3,5 GB RAM.
