Hi,

Below is a link to our online Windows 2000 Server installation guide for PowerEdge servers, which will explain the extra step of pressing the F6 key and loading the appropriate SCSI/RAID drivers for your system:

If you could reply back to this thread with the service tag of your system, I can provide the filename and a link for the exact driver you would need.

Thanks.

It looks like your system shipped with an Adaptec PERC2 4-channel RAID controller.  Below are the filenames for both the latest firmware and Windows driver for that card:

Firmware v2.71: B2317010.exe

Windows 2000 Driver v2.71:  w2ka12dr.exe

Below are steps that should get you to the downloads page that you need:

Go to http://support.dell.com
Choose your system/product type or enter your service tag under "Product Selection".
On the following page, choose Downloads from the middle of the screen.
Type in the above filenames into the Downloads Search box.

It is strongly recommended to first update the RAID controller's firmware using the instructions included with the above firmware file before proceeding with the Windows install.

Hi,

Just to confirm, did you run the w2ka12dr.exe file and extract it to create the driver diskette?  Simply copying the w2ka12dr.exe file to a floppy will not produce the results that you need.  Below is a link to the downloads page for the w2ka12dr.exe file, which gives step by step directions on how to extract the file and create the floppy you will need:

http://support.dell.com/filelib/download.aspx?FileID=56582&releaseid=r47959

When beginning your Windows 2000 install, make sure that you press the F6 (even multiple times) before the first blue install screen appears.  You should see a message similar to "Setup is now inspecting your computer's hardware configuration" at the point where you need to start hitting the F6 key.

I have updated the firmware

Firmware v2.71: B2317010.exe

Then I started to install Windows 2000, Pressed F6

then inserted the disk in drive A, that has  w2ka12dr.exe.

Still Windows does not recognize the SCSI hard drive. Please help.

Yes I have extracted the w2ka12dr.exe file and extract it to create the driver diskette.

This is a fresh install it is not an upgrade. The steps I followed are:

1. Upgrade the firmware, using the two diskette

2. insert the windows 2000 cd

3. Press F6

4. Insert the w2ka12dr.exe diskette

to create the w2ka12dr.exe  diskette, I downloaded the w2ka12dr.exe in a folder my desktop

Right click on the w2ka12dr.exe file and extracted it in a floppy disk.

Am I doing something wrong?

Hi,

Have any RAID containers (arrays) been created and configured on your hard drives at this point?  To check the status of any containers or to create new ones, I would recommend entering the PERC2 controller's array configuration by pressing CTRL-A when the RAID controller is displayed during POST.  Choose Container Configuration Utility.  What RAID arrays, if any, are listed when you choose Manage Containers from the RAID utility's main menu?

In order for Windows 2000 to detect a hard drive and install properly, a RAID container must already be created and present.  The "hard drive" that Windows is looking for will actually be a valid container that you have created in this utility.  Below is a link to online documentation for your RAID controller, which explains the process of creating/managing containers:

"I've tried all of the instructions. The firmware was already updated when I got the server. I've tried different Container sizes (8 Gb and some less than 8). When I go through the usual steps...press F6...put the disk in with the Win 2K driver and then a message will say "txtoemsetup.txt not found". And of course that's false because the file is there on the disk. For some reason, the setup isn't finding it. The version of Windows 2000 I'm installing is the Advanced Server/w SP 4 version. It is not the regular version, but the Microsoft Licensing version with Visual Studio.NET & Enterprise Architect.
