M600 Blade does show Virtual CDRom in Boot Menu

I have a M1000e Chassis with 8 M600 Blades installed - running ESX

I am trying to upgrade blade 4 by booting it from an iso attached as a virtual CDRom.

The ISO attaches ok and the idrac shows the virtual media as 'attached' but when I reboot the M600 and look at the Boot Device Menu there is no option to select the Virtual CD Rom

I just get:-

     USB CD-ROM device (not installed)
     USB Floppy device (not installed)
     Hard drive C:
     Embedded NIc 1 MBA v4.4.4 Slot 0400

If I do exactly the same on Blade 3 I do get the Virtual CD Rom showing as an option in the Boot Device Menu.

I have checked that the configs and firmware levels are all the same.  Do I have a hardware problem - and if so what part needs renewing??

Thanks for any help

Dave

Hello Dave

When you are attaching the ISO check the information pane. Does it list the ISO as 0 KB?

I would recommend resetting the iDRAC. There should be an option on the main page of the DRAC under Quick Launch Tasks to Reset iDRAC.

Thanks

Hi - thanks for the reply - Yes it does show 0kb against the ISO

can you please give more detail on where to find the option to reset the iDRAC.  I have looked long and hard but still cant see that!  I dont see the Quick Launch Task page.

Thanks again

Dave

If it's not in the quick links then I show that you can access by this method:

  • System>Remote Access>iDRAC6
  • Select the Troubleshooting tab>Diagnostics Console
  • On that page should be a button that says Reset iDRAC

If you do not have that option then you can issue a racadm command to reset it: racadm racreset

Thanks

Hi thanks for the reply - I can now find the Diagnostics console but it wont accept the racadm racreset command. The only commands it will accept are "arp", "ifconfig", "netstat", "ping" and "gettracelog"

It would be good if I could find a wat to reset this DRAC card.

Thanks for your help

You will need to run racadm from within an operating system. You can also just boot to the iDRAC BIOS via CTL E and perform a reset there.

Hi - I finally got to reset the Drac as suggested above...

Still I get no Virtual CD or Virtual Floppy showing up in the Boot Device Menu.

I have upgraded the iDRAC firmware to 1.65 and I still get the same issue.

If I go into the main BIOS setup facility the Virtual CD and Floppy dont show as options in the Boot Sequence menu

I have another M600 that is in the same chassis and that is working OK

Can you Please advise how to sort this out... its driving me nuts!

Thanks

Dave

Check to see if the virtual media attach setting is set to auto-attach. It should be under the console and virtual media settings in the DRAC. Also, try switching between active-x and java mode in the plugin settings.

If neither of those have any affect then the last suggestion I have before part replacement is draining flea power. You would have to detach the blade from the chassis for about 1 minute to drain all power.

Thanks

Dave,

What is your iDRAC vMedia Attach mode? (You can check in "System -> Console" page).  Based on this configuration virtual drive may or may not available in Boot Sequence.

1: If it is in "Detach" mode Virtual Drive will never available in "Boot Sequence" menu.

2: If it is in "Auto Attach" mode, then virtual drive will be available in "Boot Sequence" only when Virtual drives are connected using Virtual Media Wizard. If Virtual Media is not connected these drives will not show in "Boot Sequence"

3: If it is in "Attach" mode. Virtual Drive will be always available in "Boot Sequence"

You can change iDRAC Virtual Media Attach mode status to "Attach" and check the boot sequence. (You can configure this "System -> Console -> Configuration" page)

Thanks-

Shine
