Near all black screen at login screen and through RDP

Hello.  I have a Dell Poweredge 2950 server.  When I connect a monitor, mouse, and keyboard to the server to log in all I get is a near full black screen.  I can see the bar that says "Windows Server 2003 R2" login box bar, the mouse cursor moves and is white, and the yellow information icon.  Everything else is black.

I can confirm that it is not the monitor.  When I RDP to the server I get the same exact image.  I do not know if this is a hardware or a software issue.  The fact that the RDP session matches what is on the screen when a monitor is plugged in makes me think it is a hardware issue.  The server is out of warrenty so any help or information that you can give me will be very helpful.

Thanks for your time and help.

I have swapped monitor, monitor cables and it is not using a KVM switch.

I am hesitant in rebooting the server as it holds critical data and has not been backed up for a few months (I am a IT contract worker and recently took over this company).

If you can RDP to another server  or wks...., RDP, open control panel, administrative tools, computer managent, instead of "local" computer, right click, "connect to another computer", (enter your servers name with the issue). Hopefully this give you information to go on   (event viewer). Accessing device manager does not work, shame.

Hopefully you can check the event viewer, at least to see if any major issues exist before a reboot. If you go with a reboot I would be more game to have someone reboot, going into safe mode first, to see if the video driver is at fault.
