Perc-3 Power Edge 2450 with Raid 1 Floppy Boot Errors

I have to set up the server to be able to boot into the Symantec Ghost boot wizard through a floppy disk to be able to make an image of the hard drive (2 RAID-1 16GB drives) so we can place the image onto a new server (an identical one).

Unfoutunetly, the server refuses to boot to any floppy disk. The two errors I have recieved are either "Non-System Disk" or "Disk I/O Error".

The Symantec Ghost floppy disk has been tested in other systems in the company, and the disks work perfectly.

We have also tried using a Windows 98 Boot Disk to load up CD Rom drivers, and to access a command prompt. Even that did not work. We were, however, able to access a command prompt though the Windows 2000 Recovery Console. Even though the command prompt, the floppy drive is not accessable, and it gives us an I/O error. Symantec Ghost also does not support booting from a CD with networking support.

The operating system of the server is Windows 2000 Professional. Within the operating system, the floppy drive is accessable, and the contents of the Ghost floppy disk can be read.

We're thinking that the problem could relate to the setup of the RAID, and proper RAID drivers are needed to be able to boot up through a floppy drive. However, we also need to boot up with the correct Ethernet drivers to be able to set up a working Ghost Multicast session.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the help.

I suspect you have a floppy drive or floppydrive cable issue. I've seen it on the Optiplex range where within the OS it could read and write to a floppy, but it wouldn't boot to a floppy. On one occasion it turned out that the floppy drive cable had one of the outer lines cut (possibly got cut by the chassis when the user was putting the cover back on).

Ok. Before, we did check the cable, and no visible damage was noted. We also re-seeded the cable on both the motherboard and the floppy drive. We'll check it again, and probably even try another cable that is known to work.

I'll post an update if it works or not.
