PowerEdge 1900 II CPU upgrade

Hello, all.

I have a PowerEdge 1900 server (with II on the chassis) that originally had a Xeon 5050 3.00 GHz CPU.

Does this server support a Xeon 5080 3.73 GHz CPU?  If so, it would support two of these, correct?

Thanks!

If it supports one, it will support two.

However, it does not fit within the specifications that Dell has published for supported 5000-series processor specs:

Up to two Dual-Core Intel Xeon 5000 sequence processors at up to 3.0GHz (runs at 3.73GHz)
Intel Xeon 5000 Sequence: Dual Independent 667MHz (has 1066MHz)
Intel Xeon 5000 Sequence: 2x2MB (OK - has 4MB)

All the above may or may not  make a difference, but to add to that, the 5080 is also a 130W processor, requiring more power than any of the processors that meet the published specs (the X5355 is 120W).  The BIOS updates talk a lot about support being added for newer processors, but those are specifically named as being from the 5100/5200/5300/[5400] family, not the 5000 ... and nothing specifically about support for faster speeds/versions.  Now, that doesn't mean it won't work, just that there is a good chance that it will not.  So, if you have a 5080 to try, are getting one at a price that makes failure an acceptable risk, or have a good return policy, then try it and post what happens.  If not, then I would go to something that is definitely supported and even better than a 5080 (like a X5355).

You will also want to make sure your BIOS and ESM/BMC are updated to the latest version for proper support of any upgrade.

I did upgrade the Bios, BMC, and PERC firmware before starting this process.  I was hoping that another Bios update would be available to support the 5080, but I knew it wouldn't be that simple.  The latest Bios simply does not support the 5080 CPU.

The X5355 benchmark is blazingly fast!  I'm really tempted to try them.

Thanks for the quick response.

I spent a few hours testing a pair of 5080 processors in our PowerEdge 1900.  The Bios recognized them fine and the OS (Server 2003) seemed fine for a few minutes but the system would hang after a few minutes, or reboot on its own.

Therefore, I will return the 5080's and buy a matching 5050 or try a pair of X5355's.

Just a follow-up to report that the two X5355 CPU's are working flawlessly in my PowerEdge 1900.

Thanks for your assistance, theflash1932.

I only have a Poweredge 1900 version 1. Can the X5355 work in that?

Unlikely it will work. As I understand, there is NO revision III of the 1900, and the revision III was the only version of the x950's that would take the 5300-series. Try it, but don't expect it to work and make sure you can get your money back (if you are spending any at all).
