PowerEdge 830 Wont Boot with Full 8GB RAM

Hello All,

Our small company has an older Dell PowerEdge 830. We have been running off of 2GB of RAM for some time now and decided to max it out at 8GB. Some forum research and a chat with Dell revealed that it could take up to 8GB of RAM up to DDR2 800 ECC. So thats what we ordered. We got 4 sticks of Kingston KVR800D2E6K2, (2 kits of 2 stick of 2 GB each). They are 2 GB PC2-6400 CL6 ECC. With all 4 slots populated, the system never gets past the Dell logo, not even a chance for F2. It runs fine off of 2 stick in the first bank, and I have tried all 4 sticks in all combonations there. It also boots fine when combined with the old RAM (for a total of 6GB). Did we get the wrong RAM? Btw, the BIOS is A04. Thanks in advance.

I spoke to a memory specialist at another company,   they informed me that the chips I have are 9 chip high density units, and not supported by the 830s chipset.   This is designated by the .M9FC after the chips p/n.   She informed me that I need a "18" chip.  I am going to reorder and give it a try.

Not sure why any Dell rep would tell you that 800MHz would be ok, as the only speeds supported on the 830 are 533 and 667.  Sometimes you can go a step or two (max) above the stated speed, but with most servers, that is not the case.

After some more research on another forum, a member spoke up about the RAM speed, and stated that although the dell rep said it can take up to 800 MHZ, it in fact can only take up to 533MHZ. So we ordered 8GB of 533MHZ ECC RAM and booyah...8GB.  Too bad the OS is only 32 bit and can only see 4 GB...but atleast its there in the BIOS, and thats fine for now.
