Crobroker,

Let me go ahead and apologize if I misunderstood the issue you are having. What it sounds like is that you have 4 256MB dimms, as well as a single 512MB dimm. If that is the case, the issue you are going to run into is that the server will require you to install dimms in matching pairs. So the pairs 1&2, then 3&4, and then dimms 5&6 must match each other. With a single dimm in the mix, there is no way for that to work, Now if you add another 512, or remove the one you have, the system will work.

Here are the general guidelines to the SC1420 memory population.

* Always populate DIMMs in matched pairs. I.e. DIMMs 1&2, DIMMs 3&4, and DIMMs 5&6 must match
* Always start populating memory from DIMMs 1&2 near the edge of the board
* Always populate dual ranked parts first
* If four dual ranked parts are used then DIMMs 5&6 are not usable
* Dual ranked parts are never supported in DIMMs 5&6

Let me know if this helps answer your question, or if I misunderstood the issue as you explained.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for answer. Yes, I placed a matching pairs, 2x256 mB or 4x256 MB, DIMM1/DIMM2 and then 3/4.

When I try to start the server, I have 6 bip sounds and green/orange/green/orange lights.

Btw. The server had worked with 2 x 1GB, but it suddenly stoped, with this color laps and sound. After that, only memory accepted was single 512 MB, but it worked in safe mode. After that it wont work with nothing, I try every combination, but there is always that same sound of warning

It almost start  ones yesterday with singke 512 MB, but on the screen was write this:

Hardware Malfunction

Your hardware vendor for support

The system was halted

Crobroker,

Using just a single dimm is for single-channel debug mode testing. That is only used to isolate a defective dimm. The system will boot with a single dimm in slot 1,  which allows them to be cycled through individually to determine which dimm is defective. It isn't intended to be used to run the server on a single dimm, it is just for troubleshooting.

Do me a favor and test each pair of dimms in #1 and #2, that is to test the dimms themselves. Don't place any in 3, 4, 5, or 6.

You can also run 32bit diagnostic on the server, this download will install media that will create the bootable diagnostic you can run on the server.

Hi Chris,

Sorry but long time I didn't try to start this server. It wont work, I try everthing. Each DIMM separately, but nothing. Same old 'song' with six sounds.

The same sounds I have if I try to start comp without Memory modules at all.

Btw. I can't download and instal nothing, while I can't start server at all.

It sounds like there may be issue with the Dimm1 slot, which is why it is reporting the same as when no memory is installed.  You may need to look into replacing the motherboard.

Yes, same sound, but lights are not the same.

Without modules: Green/orange/orange/orange lights, "No memory modules are detected."

With modules: Green/orange/green/orange light, "Memory modules are detected, but a memory configuration or compatibility error exists."

Table 2-2. Diagnostic Indicator Codes

Is it profitable to change motherboard? And, can I extract data/documents from server without that Chris?
