PowerEdge T310--Upgrade Memory Question

I am trying to upgrade a T310 to 16 GB memory. It has a Xeon 3430 2.4 GHz processor with factory installed 8 GB memory--four 2 GB 1Rx8 DIMMs. I want to upgrade to 16 GB total so tried adding two 4G 2RX8 ECC low voltage memory as recommended by Dell parts upgrade. The server will not boot. I have looked through the forum and Dell manuals to try to figure this out. Can I upgrade to 16 GB with the existing 8 GB factory installed memory, or do I have to replace the existing memory with four 4 GB RDIMMs? Thanks! Bev S

The dimms you listed are in fact Udimms, which is why the upgrade Rdimms are not working for you. Now with those being Udimms the T310 only supports using 4 dimms total. So to reach 16 you would need to replace the existing 2gb Udimms with 4x 4GB Udimms.   Which is the same as using just the 2 8GB Rdimms alone to hit the 16GB total you are looking for.

Ascnsult,

First thing I would like to verify is if the 2gb dimms are Rdimms or Udimms. I ask as the 8GB dimms are Rdimms, which can't be mixed with Udimms. If the 2gb dimms are also Rdimms then try placing the 8GB dimms in slot 1 and 2 (white tabs) and then the 2GB dimms in the remaining slots (Black tabs). This is so that both the memory channels match. The channels are as follows Channel A is dimm 1, 3, and 5. Channel B is dimm 2, 4, and 6.

The manual discusses this on page 108 on this link - http://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_ser_stor_net/esuprt_poweredge/poweredge-t310_Owner%27s%20Manual_en-us.pdf

Let me know if this helps answer you question.

Chris, I thought the pre-installed memory was RDIMMs since that is what the Dell upgrade recommended. The Part numbers listed on the system configuration for the server are as follows: YH2VC 1 Module, Dual In-Line Memory Module, 8GB, 1R, 4X2G, Unbuffered Dimm H92NK 1 DUAL IN-LINE MEMORY MODULE, 2G, 1333, 1RX8, 8, 240, UBE I have tried installing the two RDIMMs in Slots 1 and 2 with the existing 2 GB DIMMs in 3,4,5,6. Server powers on with fan on high speed, but does not boot. Bev

I was trying to add two 4 GB (2Rx8) RDIMMs so according to manual, should be able to add four of these for a total of 16 GB, or look for the 8 GB RDIMMS. Thanks for your help, Chris!

I'm also going through a RAM upgrade/replacement on a PowerEdge T310 and had some follow-up questions on this. I'm trying to bring my server up from 4 x 1GB dimms to 12-16GB total and I'm not sure what RAM I need to buy.

I'm I to understand that if I bought Udimms I would have to purchase 4 in order for it to work (assuming I'm doing a RAM replacement)?

If I were to purchase 2 x 8GB Rdimms would they work if I put them into slot 1 and 2? Or, if I were to buy 3 x 4GB Rdimms could that configuration work?

Thanks!

Hi

I'm also going through a RAM upgrade on Poweredge T310.

When I read the technical guidebook i understand that:

The T310 accepts only   2Go RAM in Single RANK , 4Go in dual RANK , 8go in Quad RANK

Only these configurations are accepted if you want 12G, 16G or 32Go:

RAM RDIMM   ( if >12Go the system will work at 800MHz with RDIMM even if RAM is 1066 or 1333Mhz)

12G : 1066 2G x6
12G : 1333 2G x6
16G : 1066 4G x4
16G : 1333 4G x4
32G : 1066 8G x4

RAM UDIMM
8G : 1066 2G x4
8G : 1333 2G x4
8G : 1066 4G x2
8G : 1333 4G x2
16G : 1066 4G x4
16G : 1333 4G x4

So to use 8GB Rdim, you have to put 4 * 8GB RDIMM   .  I understand that only 2 * 8GB RDIM will not work at all.
