Poweredge R620 Mixed capacity RAM inquiry
Hello,
We have a R620 with Dual (Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2665 0 @ 2.40GHz)
at the moment they have 12x 16GB DIMMs wondering if we can add further 12x32GB DIMMS to this server
so the configuration will be
A1-A12 = 12X 16GB
B1-B12 = 12X 32GB.
Thank you

It does look like we have 32GB RDIMMS that are quad ranked now. It looks like it is the same DIMM as the LRDIMM but presents itself as a quad ranked RDIMM rather than a dual ranked LRDIMM. Quad ranked DIMMS only support 16 total DIMMS, 8 per processor, so this configuration will not work, as it uses 24 DIMMs. You would have to use 16X32GB to reach 512GB.
The Configuration would be A1-A8 and B1-B8
ftp.dell.com/.../poweredge-r620_Owner%27s%20Manual_en-us.pdf page 48 of the manual shows the configuration you are needing.

Or should it be ?
A1,A2,A3,A4,A5,A6 = 16GB
B1,B2,B3,B4,B5,B6 = 16GB
A7,A8,A9,A10,A11,A12 = 32GB
B7,B8,B9,B10,B11,B12 = 32GB

Hi kcravi,
Is all of the memory the same type? Are both the 16GB and 32GB DIMMS RDIMMS? Or are the 32GB DIMMS LRDIMMS? These cannot be mixed. If the DIMMS are all RDIMMS how many ranks are they, only 2 quad rank DIMMs per channel is permitted. We only offer 32GB in LRDIMMS, so unless you were getting them from somewhere else you would have to replace all of the DIMMS with 32GB LRDIMMs for it to work.
Memory population rules:

The max this server supports is 768GB, but heed the requirements:

Hello Josh,
The existing ones are RDIMMS, from Dell site on the server customization page i can see they offer 32GB RDIMMS ?
i was also told that the server can only support 512GB RDIMM Ram... I am not sure if that is true.
but if that is the case can i get extra 4x 16GB(RDIMMS) and 8x 32GB(RDIMMS) which are quad rank according to dell.
so i will have total 16x 16GB(RDIMMS) & 8X 32GB(RDIMMS) making the total 512GB
Then i can add one 32GB DIMM per Channel as below, can you please advice if this would work ?
Processor 1
channel 0: slots A1(16GB), A5(16GB), and A9(32GB)
channel 1: slots A2(16GB), A6(16GB), and A10(32GB)
channel 2: slots A3(16GB), A7(32GB), and A11
channel 3: slots A4(16GB), A8(32GB), and A12
Processor 2
channel 0: slots B1(16GB), B5(16GB), and B9(32GB)
channel 1: slots B2(16GB), B6(16GB), and B10(32GB)
channel 2: slots B3(16GB), B7,(32GB) and B11
channel 3: slots B4(16GB), B8,(32GB) and B12
Thank you
