With two NIC's, the server can only communicate with the network (including the Internet) through one NIC at a time, so the test of connectivity is:  Can you ping/access the server through 192.168.1.13?

This, of course, assumes that:

  • 192.168.1.13 is different from the address of NIC 1
  • NIC 2 has a cable connecting it to a working port on the switch, configured to allow it access to the same network you are attempting to access

What are you trying to accomplish with a second NIC?

Ping returns "Destination host unreachable"

The first NIC is 192.168.1.106.  That does ping properly.

The cable and switch port I connected to NIC 2 is the set I normally use to connect my laptop to the network.  That always worked nominally.

I started out attempting to use the second NIC with a VPN setup.  Several pieces of literature said two cards were required.  I learned this is not necessarliy true, as I was able to setup teh VPN using NIC 1 only.

I'm trying to determine if I have a bad NIC.

I know you are trying to determine if you have a bad NIC, but it is very unlikely.  To make that determination though, you must first ensure everything is set up correctly.

Do you get link lights when you plug in the cable, on the switch and the NIC?
If you go back to the NIC settings, do you have a gateway set on the second NIC, same as NIC 1?
Do you use DHCP on the network?  Should NIC 2 have received an IP address from the DHCP server?
What OS are you using?
Can you ping 192.168.1.106?
