QLE3562 HBA not dected in DELL Power Edge R720 server

QLE2562 HBA not detected in DELL Power Edge R720 server's BIOS as well as it is not visible in /sys/class/scsi_host/ and no HBA is recognized in QConverged console utility.

Server BIOS version is 1.2.6

Although HBA is successfully detected in DELL R730 server.

We once updated the RAID controller of DELL R720

Do you think Is there can be any link between changing RAID controller and Server BIOS.

As before RAID controller up gradation HBA was recognized in DELL R720.

Mmnnjj,

The first thing I would look at is the slot the card is in. Now with the full height QLE2562 (part # 6T94G) the card would be required to be in slot 4,5,6, or 7 (riser 2,3a, or 3b). If you are using the half height QLE2562 (part # VX60F) would require slot 1,2, or 3 (riser1).

Now in order to use slot 1,2, or 3 on the R720 would REQUIRE CPU 2 to be used.

After confirming that the correct card is in the correct slot, the next thing I would address is that the server is drastically out of date. Currently you are about 11 updates back on BIOS, which I assume is likely the case on the remaining devices on the server. Now when a server is that far behind on updates we do NOT recommend running the most current update, as that can cause damage to the motherboard. I would recommend walking the BIOS and iDrac up together incrementally. Now you won't have to run every one of the updates, but I wouldn't jump more than a couple at a time. You can find the list of available updates here.

So after verifying card and slot, update the server to current, then let me know if the card is or isn't functioning as it should.

Hi,

I tried to update the BIOS first from 1.2.6 to 1.3.6 but the up-gradation failed with "Unable to get the System Generation" message.

then tried to update using 1.4.8 version of BIOS but again failed with the same message i.e "Unable to get the System Generation".

Tried to search the error message in internet , as per search i found that script is trying to parse /etc/redhat-release file ,there might be some issue.but In my system there is proper entries in /etc/redhat-release i.e. Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 7.1 (Maipo)

then i tried to upgrade the BIOS version directly to 2.5.4 but the installation failed with below message:

******************************************************************************************

[root@RHEL7Svr BIOS_update]# ./BIOS_CR1RR_LN_2.5.4.BIN

I would suggest that you reboot from the OS and then run the updates from either the iDrac or Lifecycle Controller. From the link provided for the update, you would need to use the non-w32 exe version of the downloads. Again I want to reiterate to NOT jump to the latest release of the update, that large of a jump can cause the motherboard to fail to function correctly.
