The first configuration would be correct. The second wouldn't for 2 reasons, first  that the LARGER dimms must be in front of the smaller dimms. Secondly, you wouldn't have matched the 3 channels. Now a solution for that is to go to BIOS (F2) and set Memory Mode to Adv Ecc. You will lose 2 2gb dimms to make this configuration work.  Then place the dimms in the following config.

A2, A3, B2, and B3 get 8gb and A5, A6, B5, and B6 get the 2gb dimms.

Adv ECC mode drops the first channel, allowing to use 4 banks. The previous configurations we have discussed are for Optimized Mode.

ToddUnger,

I assume you have 2 processors installed. With the dimms you have there isn't a way to use all the dimms. The server requires that the 3 memory channels be populated identically. With only having 2 8gb dimms you can't match channels across the processors. Other than  populating only the first channel on both procs. So 1 8gb and 1 2gb per proc, well below what I think you want to have.

Let me know if this helps.

Thanks.  It does help.  So, let's try another example (just want to make sure I have this right).  Let's say:

6 x 8gb (a1, a2, a3, b1, b2, b3)

6 x 2gb (a4, a5, a6, b4, b5, b6)

or

6 x 2gb  (a1, a2, a3, b1, b2, b3)

4 x 8gb (a4, a5, b4, b5)

We only have 22 x 8gb dimms, but a lot of 2gb dimms.  Trying to get the best configuration to put as much RAM as possible into seven R610's.

Thank you.
