R610 memory confusion

Well, apparently this ML doesn't like pastes, and I don't feel like re-typing.  Straight to the point then:

I've got 4 sticks of Dell A5184178.  16GB PC3-10600 DDR3-1333 Low Voltage Dual Rank ECC CL-9 etc.

Thinking I'd get 64GB at 1333 Mhz, but on boot only says 64GB 800 MHz, any memory config I try.  How do I get 64GB at 1333MHZ?

If you are using two quad-rank DIMMs per channel, the memory speed will be limited to 800MHz.  If using two dual-rank DIMMs per channel, the memory speed will be limited to 1067MHz.  1333MHz can only be achieved on this generation of Intel processors using one dual-rank DIMM per channel.

Hi mlpscada

Just in case you need a reference, check out this manual on Page 116:-
ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_ser_stor_net/esuprt_poweredge/poweredge-r610_Owner%27s%20Manual2_en-us.pdf

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the page reference.  These are not quad ranked, so I can dismiss that.

If I'm reading the table that starts on page 118 correctly, will putting the memory sticks in slots A1,A4,B1,B4 result in the most optimal memory placement?

"ML" (Mailing List) should have been "forum", apologies.

These aren't quad ranked, so I can dismiss that consideration.

Is a 'channel' the 'A' and 'B' designators, or the '1','2','3' etc designators?

Thanks

Hi mlpscada

Yes, you are correct. For 2x CPUs, for Optimzer memory mode, for 4x memories, you need to populate A1, A4, B1, B4 for single channel.

There are 3 channels for each CPU

A1, A4 = channel 2

A2, A5 = channel 1

A3, A6 = channel 0

Hope this helps.
