It sounds like the issue upgrading is that with the software raid you are limited to 4 hdds. So systems with x8 hard drive backplanes configured for software RAID support only four hdd's. The remaining hard drive slots are pre-installed with the four-slot hard drive blank, and cannot be upgraded for additional storage. That being said you could try the addition of a hardware raid controller, as that should remove that limitation.
