Dell servers require ECC dimms. The server will likely not post with those dimms installed.

To add to what Chris said ... not just any ECC DIMM will do either.  You need to make sure you have the appropriate type of ECC RAM for your server model - registered, unregistered/unbuffered, fully-buffered, etc., in sizes, speeds, and layouts supported by your server.

And this isn't a Dell thing; since the Xeon 5500-series processors Intel put the memory controller in the chip (AMD did this years earlier already), and this is what sets the supported memory types.

I have to admit I have never tried non-ECC memory on a Xeon 5500/5600 system, but I have never seen any motherboard with support for Xeon 5500 and higher series processors report support for non-ECC memory, so I suspect that the memory controller just won't accept it.
