r410 add memory problem

New to me r410 came with single 4 GB memory in slot a1 (single CPU). Pulled and added first 1 x 8 GB rdimm in slot one and system boots up. Then added second 8 GB identical piece in slot a2. System comes up and disables A2 and stays at 8 gb. F2 shows memory with only one option available. It is set at optimised. Either single piece works in A1 alone and same error when A2 has a piece in it. Help

Hello Frank

Double check to make sure you are putting the DIMMs in the correct slots. The slots on the R410 start out with A4 from the CPU side, so it is A4,A1,A2,A3.

If that is not the issue then please provide me a model, part, or some kind of identification number from the DIMMs and I will check compatibility.

Thanks

Frank

This is the information I found on the DIMM:

8GB PC3-8500 ECC Registered
240pin, DDR3-1066, 1066Mhz
2RX4 Dual Rank RDIMM

All of those specifications match the requirements for DIMMs in this server. I was not able to locate the operating voltage of the DIMM. I would suggest going into the system BIOS and changing the memory voltage setting. It is set to Auto by default. Try setting it to 1.5v, that should be the only other option besides auto.

If that does not resolve the issue then that memory may not work properly in the server. There are no other options that we can change that will allow it to work.

Thanks

This Dell R410 is running bios 1.5.3 Ran system check and it runs perfectly and sees the second DIMM but runs all checks on 8 GB only. Memory from Memory-up.com is M-1333TER-8192X2BD23  which is listed as ddr3-1066 2rx4 dual rank rdimm. Remember either piece works alone but not together. I am in correct slot 1 and then slots 1-2

Well there is no option to change the voltage. It shows Auto but is greyed out. I have pulled two know good 4 GB Rdimm pieces out and they do exactly the same this, I seem to be stuck with a dead server. Not good.

Definitely

If you have tried known good memory and they do the same thing then it sounds like you have a bad slot A2 on the system board.

Thanks

Is there a way to move the CPU to the B slot and try using the four slots B1,2,3 and 4 or does the B CPU only work when it is added to the machine that already has a A CPU?

No, CPU 2 will not function without a matching CPU in slot 1 and a matching memory configuration in both lanes.

Thanks

Make sure memeory sparing isn't on.  Not sure of the name of it in this bios.   But many dells offer redundant memory modes that only give you 1/2 of the installed size the othe ris used ot mirror the data in memory.

I agree with Daniel,

I would swap the two dimms and see if the A2 still gets disabled. If it does, I would reseat the proc. If it still does not work, I would say that MB needs to be replaced..... One other question, does the new dimm work by itself?

The vender says the memory needs to be PC3L not PC3. I have not seen this designater before.

To recap either dimm works alone in slot1, but when slot 2 and slot 1 are filled with exactly the same piece type startup disables the dimm.
