slow backup possibly pointing to R710 issue

This question may sound like a VMWare or backup question, but you will understand why I am posting on the server hardware forum.

I have two VMWare hosts (one is an R710, the other IBM), and am backing up the guests to tape on a physical server (also Dell) over a 1 Gbps line. The guests are all on direct attached storage. A couple weeks ago the backups of the VMs on the R710 began to crawl. For example, a 20 minute backup now takes 5 hours or so.  This occurs with two different backup apps.  This problem only occurs for the guests on R710, whereas the other host is completely fine. Both servers use the same switches. Other than this issue, the R710 is able to host the VMs without any problem at all.  There is no indication in the logs or otherwise of a hardware problem, but all the indications seem to point to the source of the problem being with the server.  Any idea what could be causing the problem?

Hello ScotofMKE,

first what is the backup software that you are using to backup the VM’s?  Also have you done any updates to the R710 server before it started to run slow or did it just start backing up slow all of a sudden? You also state that you are backing up to tape on a different server, what is the connection from your backup server to the R710 & IBM server? Are they all using the same switch?  Also what kind of switch do you have that the R710 & IBM is going through?

Let us know if have any other questions.

I am experiencing the problem both with Veeam 6.1 and Backup Exec 2012.  No updates were done prior to the slowdown.  The backup is running over a 1 Gbps connection.  There are two switches (DLink DGS-3048 and HP E5406), and the backup server is connected to the DLink.  The two virtual hosts are connected to both switches.

Hi,  Try setting the nics to be 1000 full duplex.  Are you running the two different backup solutions at the same time or separately?
