Adding ready drive to failed RAID 5 array

Hi guys, I have an R530 with PERC H730 Mini. The RAID 5 array is in a failed state but is still operational in Windows Explorer:

Virtual Disk Status: Failed
3 disks showing in the RAID 5 array (4 TB each)
RAID size showing 15TB (should be 4 disks)
2 disks show Ready

I can't seem to add either of those 2 disks to the array. The working RAID 1 array shows many options including Reconfigure but this failed array options only show Delete..., Blink & Unblink.

Any ideas?

Questioneer,

Would you be able to show screenshots of what you're seeing, as well as letting us know if the server is up to date on BIOS, iDrac, Raid controller, and drives?

Let me know what you see.

Sure, attached. 3 disks seem to be in degraded mode, I've 2 extra but can't add them..

Hello,

Thanks for the screenshots.

It's weird that your RAID5 properties show only 3 disks, but you stated it is 4 disk configuration? Could you check in the hardware logs for any traces of disk failures or any hints? The physical disk properties all show in good status. In physical disks properties, the drop down task in PD03 and 04, what options are there available?

Do you have iDRAC? Would you be able to collect supportassist logs and upload it in iDRAC?

And sorry I should have said, we did have a disk failure and 0:1:3 was replaced. I'm not sure if 0:1:4 was ever in the array but could be wrong, I didn't install this server. Also option for 0:1:3 shown in 2nd image.

Thanks.Annotation 2020-06-23 135816.png

Hi,

Unfortunately, I couldn't see the last two screenshots. Could you have a chance to reshare screenshots and to gather supportassist log and upload it in iDRAC? Please when you are collect TSR log select to RAID logs as well. You can check this article https://dell.to/380ySJR

We can look at FW versions, such as predictive failures,etc..

How many discs were in total when you first made RAID 5? you said you were changing the 0:1:3 disc when did you change that disc could it be possible that rebuilding will continue?

Ok so I've attached that image again. Also how do I send files? I've saved the logs from OpenManage Essentials so I presume they're the same as the iDRAC files?

That's done. I guess the goal here is to add those 2 "Ready" disks into the RAID5 array without losing data.

Thanks.

Hi, thanks for the info you can upload the file to here https://dell.to/2Z1Odpn

Hi Questioneer,

I think we misunderstood each other from the beginning.

I believe you want to repair the degraded Virtual Disk (VD) and return it to a healthy state. Let’s focus on this first.

It is hard to say what exactly happened to this VD before and why the rebuild didn’t start automatically after the Hard Drive (HDD) replacement.

Nevertheless, the most sensible option right now is to set one of these new HDDs (in Ready state) as a Global Hot Spare. You already found this option in one of the Drop-Down menus.

Try that – this should start the Rebuild almost instantaneously (the status may in OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) may require a couple of minutes to refresh). The process whole may take several hours.

If you are trying to expand the size of the VD, first you have to finish the rebuild. Then you may look into the option of Online Capacity Expansion or Reconfiguration.

Here is a video, which shows how you can add a physical HDDs to your RAID using OMSA: https://dell.to/2B4PQe6

You may also want to check the user manual for the PERC H730 controller, which contains general information regarding the reconfiguration of VDs – page 30: https://dell.to/2Z2szkR

Let us know if this helps.

So I tried that before and just now and the warning below shows. Then if I go ahead anyway, it seems to set it as a GHS but doesn't seem to rebuild?

Sorry for the delay. Would you please Private Message me the service tag for the server?

Thank you.

Hi, tag has been posted privately.

Thanks.

Hi, I'm not heard back via this chat or private msg about this issue. Any luck with it?
