Dell R510 with Dell Xyratex HB-1235

So, I've bought an old R510 - 12 bay(hasn't arrived yet), without drives, and found a cheap HB-1235 with 12x2TB that im considering buying, i was wondering if i could connect them directly, the R510 is equipped with an H700 PERC card, could i use one of the ports on that, to run a cable to the HB-1235 (and still keep some kind of R510 Backpanel functionality (USB and internal drives) or is that not possible, as far as i can see from the documentation both controller cables in the 12-bay connects to the backpanel? Thanks for any advice Lars

The R510 supports a maximum of 1 internal storage controller and 2 external storage controllers.

Having 2 internal storage controllers may work. The H700 and H800 are very similar in functionality, the main difference is that one has internal connectors and the other has external. You should be able to use a second H700 as an external controller. The two concerns I would have are air flow and controller initialization/BIOS load. The system is capable of loading multiple storage controller BIOS, so I don't think it will be an issue. Since multiple internal storage controllers are not supported, there may be an issue with loading multiple internal storage controller BIOS. I doubt it will be an issue, but when you run unsupported configurations it is trial and error, you just have to test to see.

Hello

It might work. If the backplane is not correctly cabled then you are likely to receive errors. So, in your proposed configuration you will receive a SAS A/B cable missing error. The system may still function with the error, I'm not certain if it will prevent POST.

I suggest that you get an external controller that is supported by the storage device. You can also use one of our external controllers, but I'm not sure if they will work with that device. It looks like the R510 supports several external controllers - PERC6e, PERC H800, SAS 5/e, 6Gbps SAS HBA. You can find out more about the capabilities and specifications on the support pages.

Thanks for the quick answer!

So an H800 might be the way to go, say, if I had another H700 internal module(I've bought two identical R510s), could i pop it in the one R510, and run it with two H700's thus having 4 channels, 2 for the backpanel in the R510 and two to run to the HB-1235?

In other words, does the R510 support two internal H700 cards?

Thanks again

Lars
