External HD connected to PERC 6/E card ? Which cable
Hello,
I own a R410 connected to a MD1000 thru a PERC6/E card. (the system is running Windows Server 2008 R2)
I wish to connect an eSATA HD in order to replace the USB backup HD.
Is it possible ? Will this configuration support hotplugging ? (the backup drive is placed in a vault 1/week )
And finally, which cable should buy ?
Thanks a lot,
Christophe

You'd have to see if you can find an SFF-8470-to-eSATA cable.
There is one potential problem though; to use the eSATA HDD, you'll need to make it a single disk raid 0. This will likely wipe all data, and also will likely make it unreadable on anything other than another PERC6E (or PERC H800 or LSI equivalent).

Thank you !
It worth try, as the backup time will be cut by at least 3 :-)
I found this :
www.computercablesource.com/sas-cable-01-meter-external-4x-sas-host-to-4-sata-target-sff-8470-to-4-x-sata-1425.html
and the eSATA version

I don't think a SATA connector will fit in an eSATA port (SATA has that notch on one end that eSATA doesn't have).
This means you are probably better off with the 2nd cable (pretty expensive though).
