R730XD - PCI-E H330 to 2-slot rear backplane

Hi All,

We have an R730XD 24+2 chassis with SSD's both in the front and rear slots.  We want to have the rear slots controlled by a PCI-E H330 controller, and the front to be controlled by a mini-mono HBA330, with software RAID that we'll set up later.  Two major questions arise from this.

1. We were able to connect the rear BP to the H330 with a straight-to-90 SFF-8643 SAS cable, but it's a weird fit and we'd like to find a part number for a straight to straight version of the same cable.

2. When we make this connection with our existing cable, we get a message saying "CBL0009: Backplane 0 connector A0 is not connected."

No amber lights, everything appears to work, but I don't like seeing this message.  Can anyone provide assistance?

Thanks!

Hi,

Backplane 0 A0 should be from the integrated controller to the front backplane. Which cables are connected to which ports?

We have the front backplane (a0 and b0) hooked to the mini mono hba330, and the rear backplane hooked to the pci-e h330 at port A of the controller

Try clearing the hardware logs and see if the error goes away.

Hello jtostenr,

Is this something that was working and now is not?

I'll start with attaching wiring images. Please let me know if it helps.

What chassis you have? is it 12X3.5 or 24X2.5. Connecting rear to separate controller is supported on 24X2.5 chassis.

Hi @jtostenr,

Could you provide us the rear backplane DPN#?

This is a server I purchased recently and originally only had an H330 mini (which I swapped for an HBA330 mini) and added the H330 PCIE. The H330 was in the wrong riser, so I relocated it to Riser 1, but still have the same issue. The only difference is that I am using the cable with part # 08KX9H. Isn't that electrically equivalent to the 8RJM1 cable or is there some other difference?

It is the 24X2.5 with rear backplane # 0NHDXG

Hi @jtostenr,

The cable #8KX9H seems to be the correct cable part for the backplane #NHDXG.

How many CPU is installed on the server? Do you have the original H330 mini that was swapped out? If you getting the same error message: CBL0009: Backplane 0 connector A0 is not connected; it is pointing to cabling from the integrated PERC (HBA 330mini at this point) to the backplane connector A0. What if you swap back the H330 mini and disconnect the rear backplane, do you get the same error?

On the side note, have you done all the firmware updates of each server hardware? Starting with iDRAC/LCC, BIOS then PERC.

Can you check serial redirection setting on BIOS. If serial redirection is enabled you will be getting the screen which you shown

When you connect rear backplane to H330, which all port from front backplane is connected to HBA330Mini

Changed serial redirection to Auto and that fixed the GUI issue, thank you!

The HBA330 mini is connected to A0 and B0 on the front backplane with cable #05YYHW.

Ok, here is what I have done so far:

- Installed H330 Mini, connected cable #8KX9H from front backplane connector A1 to rear backplane connector (H330 PCIE still installed in Riser 1, but no cable connected) => no alarms

- Moved cable #8KX9H from front backplane connector A1 to H330 PCIE connector A => CBL0009: Backplane 0 connector A0 is not connected. (Also UEFI0116)

- Installed HBA330 Mini, connected cable #8KX9H from front backplane connector A1 to rear backplane connector (H330 PCIE still installed in Riser 1, but no cable connected) => no alarms

- Moved cable #8KX9H from front backplane connector A1 to H330 PCIE connector A => CBL0009: Backplane 0 connector A0 is not connected. (Also UEFI0116)

BIOS version: 2.13.0

Firmware version: 2.83.83.83

LC Firmware: 2.83.83.83

HBA330 mini FW: 16.17.01.00

H330 PCIE FW: 25.5.9.0001

Also, I am getting this old bios interface instead of the more modern GUI I have with all my other Dell servers. Is that related to my issue?

Maybe it is an issue with that cable connector A0

As a test try swapping A0 and B0, or just use the B0 connector on the A0 slot. Then just the A0 cable connector on B0.  Trying to get some other error to see if it is the port or cable.

I get this error: CBL0009: Backplane 0 connector A0 is not connected.

Backplane 0 is the rear backplane, correct? It doesn't make sense that it is saying not connected, because I am able to configure the two drives in the rear backplane as RAID1 using the H330 PCIE.
