400SC - Windows XP Lockups

I have recently received a 400SC. I removed the cdrom from the system and replaced it with a Toshiba SD-M1202 DVD-ROM. I can boot off of this CDR/DVD-ROM drive and I can install the OS from this drive. What I can not do is read the drive once the OS is fully installed. The OS locks up and the drive activity stays on.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what would cause this?

The drive is set for Cable Select and it is snuggly connected to the same cable connector that the original cdrom was intalled on.

To give you and a better picture of what I have installed in this system, here is a list:

  • 2 - 256MB PC400 DDR Ram (Patriot from Fry's)

  • 2 - 120 GB HD w/ 8MB buffer

  • 1 - ATI 9600 XT w/ newest Catalyst drivers and Hydravision

  • 1 - SB Audigy Platinum (Only drivers installed, not all other apps)

  • 1 - Windows XP Pro w/ SP1a

  • 1 - Sony DRU-500A (Ext via Firewire on SB Audigy)

  • 1 - Canon USB Scanner

  • 1 - Dazzle Fusion (via USB)

  • 1 - Planar 19' LCD Monitor (I know.. it did not need to be listed - LOL)

The 400SC has the P4 2.4Ghz HT Processor in it.

I appreciate any and all help.  Thank you in advance.

I know you heard this before, but the AGP slot isnt supported by dell...figured I'd be the mods to it first

Before you swapped the cdroms was system working?

Apparently my Toshiba SD-M1202 either is aging and has some issues now, or its has some firmware issues with the Intel chipset once all drivers are loaded. I think its the earlier issue.

I reinstalled my original Lite-On 486s CDRom that came with the PC and it works. Thought it seems to be a little picky as to what it can read and what it cant (read CDRW here).

    Anyhow.. That was my fix.

    Thanks for the information.
