BackPlane capacity (2.5 to 3.5)
Hello everybody.
I have a Dell R710 with a Perc H700 controller. BackPlane is for x8 2.5 inch hard drives.
I have an external rack for 3.5 inch HDs.
Question: I would like to know if it is possible to do the following: Is it possible to connect 3.5 inch HDs on the x8 backplane to 2.5 HDs?
Are there any features that could put the server at risk of damage?
For example: 3.5 inch hard drives consume more power. I'm not able to assess if my server can support higher power HDs.
I will be very grateful if you help me.

Hi @silva43,
If I understand you correctly, you're asking if you're able to fit a 3.5" drive into a 8X 2.5" drive backplane? If that's the question, then it's not possible. But your post title says 2.5" drive into a 3.5" backplane? Could you elaborate more about your question.
Here the user guide: https://dell.to/3NwGyb4, refer to page 12. Which configuration do you have, Figure 1-1 or Figure 1-2?

Hi, Joey, Thanks for responding to my post.
I'll try to explain again:
I have an R710 with backplane for 2.5 inch HDs, it can fit up to 8 2.5 inch HDs (2.5 inch HD bays).
I have some 3.5 inch HDs. The docking (HD bays) of the R710 does not support 3.5 inch HDs, this feature I understand.
What I want: I bought some SATA extender cables. So I'm going to put my 3.5 inch HDDs in an external HD rack next to the R710 server.
I'm going to use the SATA extender cables to connect these 3.5 inch HDs to the SATA ports (power and data) that are on the R710's backplane.
Question: I couldn't get technical information about the backplane. I would like to know if connecting 3.5 inch HDDs to a backplane to 2.5 inch HDDs will burn the backplane or cause some electrical damage.
