Benefits for using UEFI over BIOS
Hello,
I just got an R620 with PERC H710 Mini and noticed boot mode was configured using Legacy. I was wondering about benefits / drawbacks of switching to UEFI boot mode.
The server has 8 disks that are configured as one RAID-1 and one RAID-6. I know that switching from Legacy to UEFI will require an OS reinstall but that’s ok. OS would be Linux.
I read that UEFI boot mode could interfere with BIOS management of the PERC card. Is this true?
I read that UEFI boot mode is faster than Legacy. Is this true?
Is there any impact regarding iDRAC access / IPMI SOL / Virtual CD attachement when using UEFI or Legacy boot mode?
Are there any reasons to keep using Legacy boot mode?
Thank you.

The UEFI is much much slower than BIOS mode, your boot times will go through the roof. The main if only reason to switch to UEFI is you get secure boot IMHO. Whether that is of value to you is a different question.

Hello jcarnat,
In BIOS mode you enter the PERC controller in POST with
In UEFI mode you enter the PERC controller in System Setup
You must keep legacy BIOS mode if OS only supports boot volume to 2TB
