In which system? No problem in a 2950 (for example), but you can't do it in Rxxx or Txxx systems. Processors with the memory controller onboard MUST have equal configurations on each processor.
R710. I have 2x8GB memory. tried A1,B1 but bios only show 8GB. also tried B1-B9 though so i suspect there could be issue with motherboard? right now i just put 2 memory on cpu 1 dimms. I can still boot up but does this mean cpu 2 will not function properly without memory?

There's nothing wrong with the motherboard.
Yes. Memory MUST be configured equally for both processors.

hmm do you mean bios showing 8GB ram with 2x8G A1,B1 dimms is normal?
