Cannot get 16 GB of RAM to work

We have a Dell PowerEdge 1900 Version 2 server.  We are trying to install 16GB of RAM in the machine. We installed 2 GB sticks in the 8 slots but the machine is picking up the primary slots and not the secondary ones.

We are running Windows Server 2012 R2 on machine.  It is a 64 bit OS.

The memory came with the following tag on it

Arch Memory

2GB 667MHz FB SW 05282015

Suggestions would be helpful.  Been <ADMIN NOTE: Substitute character removed as per TOU> around with this for majority of the day.

Hello

Are you receiving any errors? Check the hardware log for errors about DIMMs being disabled.

We installed 2 GB sticks in the 8 slots but the machine is picking up the primary slots and not the secondary ones.

Can you give more detail as to what is going on. Is the system only detecting 8GB of memory?

The most likely issue is one of these three:

  • Compatibility issue with the memory
  • An issue with a DIMM causing the others to be shut off
  • The memory mode is set to mirror or some other advanced configuration

I would suggest reviewing he memory configuration in the system BIOS to check the mode. If a single DIMM is failed and disabled then population rules may force other DIMMs offline. Test each of the 4 problem DIMMs in slot 1 by themselves to ensure they are functional.

If the configuration is correct and all of the DIMMs test fine then it could simply be a compatibility issue with the memory. Most odd issues that I encounter are caused by unsupported hardware or software in a system. Hardware and software that is not validated can cause very bizarre behavior throughout the system.

Thanks
