Complete Power Failure After PSU Firmware Update

Hi all experts,

We are operating a PowerEdge T320 with two redundant 750 W power supply units manufactured by Delta. Today I tried to update these PSUs' firmware to the latest version published on the download page (file Power_Firmware_JX7PR_WN64_09.2B.80_A00.EXE). The procedure seemed to go well, the software was loaded and the system switched off as expected. Then, however, both PSUs started blinking amber and the system does not power up again.

Has anyone an idea what I could do to bring it to life again?

Best regards,

Dietmar.

DietmarWeickert,

Power down the server and then remove all the hardware from the server, but the following;

  • System Board
  • CPU1 with heat sink (minimum for troubleshooting)
  • Single DIMM configuration with DIMM in socket A1
  • Control Panel with cable (to power system on)
  • PSU (and for redundant PSU also the PDB/PIB)

That is the Minimum to POST hardware. After doing that see if the server will complete POST, as well as see if there is any error codes displayed on the LCD. Also, had you run any other updates on the server prior to this update? Such as Drac or BIOS?

Let me know what you see.

Dear Chris,

Thank you very much for the quick response. I tried what you proposed (there was not much to disassemble, only hard disks, DVD drive, and memory; it is quite a simple machine), but there is no difference. I also get no error message on the display. (Only after re-assembling there was a message about the missing side cover which again disappeared after closing it.) The LCD display shows nothing but the service tag and is lit either not at all or blue.

I did quite a number of updates before that, and actually it did not all go well too. After letting the LifeCycle Controller look for updates it came up with quite a list and started to install all of them. The BIOS update ran into the timeout and thus failed, but all the rest seemed to have gone well. So I wanted to let LC look again what is missing, but since the first update sequence it did not detect the two NICs any more, which took FTP out of the options. In consequence I downloaded the BIOS update from the Dell download page and started a manual installation via a USB storage. That went finally well, but LC still did not see the NICs. So I downloaded all firmware updates for this machine I could find and went through them. Two items where a missing upgrade was then reported by LC were the PSUs. So I selected the update, and first wanted to update one PSU after the next to avoid troubles. This, however, was not possible, it was an "all or nothing" choice. LC then loaded the firmware and the system powered down as expected. After some minutes the LEDs of first one and maybe two minutes later the other PSU started blinking amber, and this is the status since then. Whenever I looked at the small LCD at the front panel I saw nothing but the service tag.

Should I try to take away the lithium battery to force a reset?

Kind regards,
Dietmar.

Thank you.

Do you know if you are able to connect to the server via the drac, or is that not accessible either? Do you have another T320 with 750w power supplies we could test in the server? I wanted to see if we can isolate the issue as being the Power supplies, and their update, or the remaining system, and its updates. Also have you tried the system with each power supply being in slot #1, without the other power supply being installed?

I was able to solve this recently on a R620 with 2 PSU Delta de 750 W (PN: 5NF18). One was bricked (amber led) and the other one was working. I updated everything (Bios, Idrac, drivers, etc), then I downloaded the latest PSU firmware for Linux and Windows (Power_Firmware_JX7PR_WN64_09.2B.80_A00.EXE and Power_Firmware_JX7PR_WN64_09.2B.80_A00.BIN) Tried to update inside Linux Centos 7 first, after sometime when server is powered off updating, the led goes green, but it backs to amber when it turns on. After that I let a full reboot went thru. Following I entered Idrac and updated it again using Firmware Update inside Idrac with the .exe windows firmware and it worked like a charm.

I have the same problem. No power on after my PowerEdge server R730xd PSU 1100W firmware update. I have the same  problem with both of my 1100W PSUs. They are both flashing amber (No boot).

Luckily I do have 2 of the 750W PSUs (I did not do the FW update on these 2.)  so I am currently running my R730XD with the 750W PSUs.  Please help me on how to bring my 1100W PSUs boot again.

Thanks,

Bryant Vo

REBORN68,

Would you confirm if the server is up to date, other than the PSUs, such as the BIOS, iDrac, Raid controller, etc? Also, if you power down the server, remove the power cables, and drain the flea power by holding down the power button, if you insert the 1100 watts and plug in the cables, does the amber lights appear then or after depressing the power button?

If you try each of the 1100 watt PSUs individually, in both slots, do you see different results?

Laslty, if you have a known good working R730xd, you may want to consider trying them in that server.

If after all this the results are still the same then it may be a matter of the 1100w PSUs are bricked, but lets see what we find before reaching that conclusion.
