DRAC5: disapponting console plugin

I just tried the console feature in the DRAC5 of my brand spanking new PE1950 and was deeply
disappointed by how it has changed from DRAC4. The thing is now an ActiveX plugin instead
of a Java applet, which means I can't use it anymore. The DRAC4 console was quite usable
on every platform I happened to try it on (even Solaris9/SPARC+Firefox).

Is there a way to get a Java version of the DRAC console plugin back so that it is usable on
non-Windows-x86-platforms as well? This is a huge step backwards in terms of system
openness on Dell's behalf.

This is probably the last PowerEdge server I'm going to buy.

But it performs about 100 times better. The DRAC4 console was VNC-based.

The DRAC5 console uses the same Avocent screen scrap protocol that their IP KVMs use. I totally agree with you as far as the DRAC4 console being available cross-platform. It seems to me that as long as Dell can just say they have a product that does something, it doesn't matter what the caveats are. The purchasing manager doesn't know the difference.

The RAC5 is completely re-done. There is no way to use DRAC4 firmware on the DRAC5. One nice feature of the DRAC5 is that the virtual media is connected via USB now. It is now possible to re-assign the drive letter of the VM when the server is running. Previously, this was a large issue when working with disaster recovery (aka Dell "tech" made a site visit).

As far as being the last PE you buy - I can only wish I had that option.
