Del power edge T310 memory problem
I have Del power edge T310, I know that the server maximum memory is 32 GB
I have four memory chips 4GB and one chip 8 GB when I install them on the server, it reads 8GB only from memory However when I remove 1 chip 4GB the machine reads 20 GB RAM so how can I adjust the server to read the total memory size 24 GB (4*4GB + 8GB)

Mazeem,
What are the specs on the dimms you have installed, are they RDIMMS (Registered) or are they Udimms (Unbuffered)?
There are two channels available, with up to 2 U-DIMMs or 3 R-DIMMs per channel. The requirements for those are :
RDIMMs and UDIMMs cannot be mixed.
Except for memory channels that are unused, all populated memory channels must have identical configurations.
Memory modules of different sizes can be mixed in A1-A3 or B1-B3 (for example, 2-GB and 4-GB), but all populated channels must have identical configurations.
1,3, and 5 are channel A
2,4, and 6 are channel B.

Chris , Thanks for your support
Here is the specs of the DIMMS installed:
4* 4GB :
1*8GB :
and installed as follow
DIMM B1 (2)
DIMM B2 (4)
DIMM B3 (6)
DIMM A1 (1)
DIMM A2 (3)
DIMM A3 (5)
4 GB
4 GB
--
8 GB
4 GB
4 GB
As the previous installation the server reads 8 GB only , it should read total of 24 GB but it comes out with error of wrong distribution of memory”Memory Configuration is not optimal” and reads 8 GB only -.
However when removing the 4 GB from slot DIMM A3 (5) it reads 20 GB successfully,
Waiting for your reply

"Memory modules of different sizes can be mixed in A1-A3 or B1-B3"
... in your case, 4-GB and 8-GB
"But all populated channels must have identical configurations"
... meaning that channel A (slots 1,3,5) must have the same configuration as channel B (slots 2,4,6). In this case, the configuration of channel A (3 DIMM's) is not identical to channel B (2 DIMM's). It may be able to handle different size modules, but the configurations must be balanced. Sounds like you can do 20GB with the DIMM's you have or get another 8GB DIMM and do 32GB.

The reason you are having issues is the configuration across both channels isn't matching. What you can do is add another 8gb dimm and place it in B1. That will allow you to max out the server at 32gb. You can't have a dimm in A3 and not one in B3. The A's have to match what the B's have installed.
