Dell PowerEdge R410 (SAS) not recognising disks.
Hello,
I've bought a refurbished Dell R410, with a SAS backplane and an PERC S100 controller. BIOS version 1.12 and PERC version 2.0.0.16*** (or something like that).
My problem is that I cannot get it to recognise any disks, no matter what I do. I've tried to turn off the SATA-controller, set it to RAID, AHCI or ATA. I've tried with (2) SATA disks (SSD), two SAS disks; One 2.5, and one of them an official 3.5 Dell drive. All for naught. The RAID configuration utility is unable to find the disks, and so is the BIOS. Nothing shows up when I try to change the boot order, it just tells me there are no bootable disks.
Now, I'm not sure if I should be seeing some other configuration tool. I've seen a few posts online mention that something should be displayed before the CTRL + R option for the RAID controller, but I don't get anything like that. Just a brief mention of the backplane's version and such. Only if I've turned off the SATA controller though.
I'm at my wits end here, and I'm beginning to wonder if something is broken. As such I was hoping anyone here could be so kind as to help me figure out this mystery?
If you need any more information, please let me know. If I don't know it off hand, I can get it posted on Monday when I get to work.

Turn off the S100 ... you don't want to use it. Can you see the disks in the BIOS when using AHCI mode?

I've only once been able to see the disk in the BIOS, and that is right after I hit CTRL+ALT+Del shortly after initiating the Diagnostics boot. Which caused it to go into a loop, where it would always try to boot into the diag mode until I let it complete. Other than that I've not been able to see any of the disks in the BIOS.
Also, how do I turn off the S100? There is no option for this in the BIOS, unless I do that by using AHCI (or any of the other modes)?

Almost forgot: After I let it boot into the diagnostics mode, and then rebooted, the disk was gone from the BIOS again.

You certainly have something wrong ... bad disk or bad connector on the board maybe. You might try swapping around hardware with another system to see if you can isolate the problem/pattern.
The S100 is just a rebranding of Intel's chipset controller, so you probably are safe having the SATA controller in AHCI mode and not RAID.

Sorry about the delayed response.
I've tried just about anything I could imagine, but in the end only one thing worked: Removing the backplane, and using the SATA-controllers on the motherboard. A friend had a modular power connector for SATA-disks, which fit into the ATX-power plug in which the backplane was connected.
Was some indications of corrosion on some of the condensers on the backplane, so we suspect it might be the cause of the problem. In any case, it's just a hobby-server so we're happy with having it up on SATA-disks.
Thanks for the help!
