Dell PowerEdge R910 2 CPU system Max RAM

I have a PowerEdge R910, with 2 CPU's and 256GB of RAM installed.  All of the RAM currently are 8GB RDIMM's across 4 Riser's.  I'm interested in upgrading the RAM to 512GB by removing all 32 8GB DIMM's and installing 32 16GB DIMM's.  The Dell manual (link below) states on pages 93 and 94, that the max amount is 256GB on a 2 CPU system.  I'm really just looking for confirmation that 256GB is the max amount of RAM on a 2 CPU system, or if 512GB would indeed be recognized by the system.

Hello

The information in the manual is not up to date. The system supports up to 2TB of memory. You can have up to 1TB of memory in a two CPU configuration with 32GB modules.

Whether or not your system will support that much memory depends on the CPU. The memory controller on Nehalem CPUs does not support DRAM sizes larger than 2 gigabits. If you have a Nehalem CPU you may be at maximum configuration already. I would have to look through all of the 16 and 32 modules to see if any of them use 2Gb DRAMs. The system will not complete POST if you install a module with unsupported DRAMs. I think we have 16GB modules that are supported by Nehalem CPUs, but I don't think we have 32GB modules that are supported.

The initial release of the R910 was only available with Nehalem CPUs. We released an updated version of the R910 with a different system board to support Westmere CPUs. Those CPUs support the larger DRAM sizes.

Thanks

Looking at Open Manage, the 2 processors are Intel Xeon CPU E7- 4860 @ 2.27GHz which seem to be Westmere.  Since this is the case, which 16GB modules are appropriate?

OpenManage reports these are Intel Xeon CPU E7- 4860 2.27GHz so they appear to be Westmere.  Please let me know what 16GB Dimm's should be used.

Also, please confirm that a 2 CPU system can only use 32 out of the 64 slots.

Your processor should support 16GB and 32GB modules. The system can be fully populated with 32GB modules for a total of 2TB of memory.

Hello,

Reading through this post, I found that the Nehalem processors do not support  16 and 32 GB memory.
I just purchased a R910 and it has X7560 processors and according to this site: https://store.flagshiptech.com/intel-xeon-x7560-slbrd-vj9ft-2-26ghz-24mb-eight-core-cpu-processor/

that processor is a Beckton. So I was wondering if this processor support 16 and 32 GB memory?

Kind regards,

Lewis

Hi Lewis,

X7560 is previously known as Nehalem EX, and the support for 16GB is limited to DRAM availability and 4Gb DRAMs are not supported by Nehalem & Nehalem-EX processors.

It's recommended to use Westmere-EX processors https://dell.to/3ad5T4W

as new processors can use Low Voltage DIMMs and added support for 4GB DRAM DIMMs.
