Dell PowerEdge SC1420 issues
Hi all,
I'm having an issue with a PowerEdge SC1420 server I recently picked up. The server will not completely follow through with an OS install (hangs or reboots at installing devices) or run the Server Assistant CD (reboots or hangs while booting up). The LEDs on the front indicate either a memory error or an expansion card error and I noticed this happens regardless of the RAM (I've tried running only one stick and it boots in debug mode) or the SCSI card installed, as I have an Adaptec 2120S and the original U320 that came with the server. Would it be wise to purchase a 2x512MB RAM combination to test the memory or is there a setting I may have messed up?
I made a YouTube video of the issue when starting the Server Assistant CD which can be found here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LsxBJU56ALg
Thanks much,
Brandon Geyer-Lopez

If there is a memory error on the front panel LEDs, I would try with known good memory. If you still get the error, then the motherboard is most likely the cause.

Thanks, I'll give that a try and report back if it doesn't work. I don't have any on hand so I'll have to find somewhere nearby that will sell it.

Something I just noticed when trying to boot the server up again is that when it stops displaying it'll either restart or just not work at all and have to be reset by hand. When it does the latter the lights on the front will be light up as green-orange-orange-off, this isn't documented as an error code that I can help to diagnose the problem. What would be causing this?

It's documented as, "A possible VRM 0 failure has occurred."

If I am not mistaken, the VRM for the first processor is built-in on the motherboard.

Looks like I'd have to get the motherboard replaced then?

Seems like it. Probably just get a new system since the MB is going to cost about the same I'd bet.
