Dell PowerEdge T110 II Add On Video Graphics Card That Works

System configuration:
Dell PowerEdge T110 II
BIOS 2.8.0
RAM 2x8GB

For several reasons (e.g. PCI bus power) it is challenging to install an add-on graphics card in Dell PowerEdge T110 II.  The ATI Radeon HD 5450 is a good choice for the Dell PowerEdge T110 II because if its low (approx. 10W) power consumption.

After trying several HD 5450 graphics cards (listed below), one that works is a "VisionTek Radeon HD 5450 - Graphics card - Radeon HD 5450 - 2 GB DDR3 - PCI Express 2.1 x16".

Edit: Thanks to paikat for following part numbers, (see his posting for links where to buy)...
VisionTek Part# : 900356
Dell Part# : A6173020

This card works when the monitor is connected to VGA/D-SUB/DB15 connector. I did not try connecting to the HDMI or DVI connectors.

After installing this graphics card, the BIOS setup changed from:
Integrated Devices > Embedded Video Controller: Enabled

to saying:
Integrated Devices > Embedded Video Controller: Standard

and allowed to switch from "Standard" to "Distributed" so it now says:
Integrated Devices > Embedded Video Controller: Distributed

Note: Install the card with the monitor connected to the Integrated / On-board video port, change the BIOS settings to Distributed, reboot the computer, and then connect the monitor to the Discrete / Distributed / Add-on video port.

The following are identifiers on the "VisionTek Radeon HD 5450 - Graphics card - Radeon HD 5450 - 2 GB DDR3 - PCI Express 2.1 x16"

54502GBPC
VT 5450 PCIe 2GB V/D/H

Here are some pictures of the  DELL VT 5450:

Other video cards that were tested and did NOT work well in the T110 II are:

* XFX AMD Radeon HD 5450 1GB GDDR3 VGA/DVI/HDMI Low-Profile PCI-Express Graphics Card HD545XZQH2;HD-545X-ZQH2
Note there is another version of this card i.e. ONXFX1PLS2 that was not tested.

* JATON Video-PX610GT-EX GeForce GT 610 2GB 128-Bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Low Profile Ready Video Card

* DELL HIS H545H1G Radeon HD 5450 (Cedar) 1GB 64-Bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.1 x16

I hope this may help others avoid frustration when trying to install a video card in a Dell PowerEdge T110 II.

I read through this thread and saw the VisionTek suggestion, will this also work with the E3-1230V2 motherboard?

My guess is the Dell PowerEdge T110 II uses the same motherboard for various CPU configurations, but that is only a guess.

Also, are there any better options possibly with DDR5 and directx 12 support ?

None that I know of, but I only tried a few cards. Please let us know if you find any better cards than the VisionTek 900356

I saw a thread suggesting ASUS GTX650-E-2GD5, anyone have any inputs about this card?

I tried a GeForce GT 610 2GB and it did not work.  Check the power usage (TPD) of the  GTX650-E-2GD5 and ensure it is less than 25 watts (see below)

Side Notes:

1. The PCIe x16 slot is actually a "full size x8 slot" (also known as a x16/x8 slot) and the Video card needs to work in this type of slot.

2. Video Card wattage (TDP) is a limiting factor. Dell technical guide says "The system supports 25 W maximum power for all four PCIe cards."  and Dell owner's manual says "CAUTION: To ensure proper cooling, no more than two of the four expansion cards can have a power consumption of greater than 15 W (up to 25 W maximum each), not including the integrated storage controller card."

3. Install the card with the monitor connected to the Integrated / On-board video port, change the BIOS Integrated Devices > Embedded Video Controller from "Enabled" / "Standard" to "Distributed", reboot the computer, and then connect the monitor to the Discrete / Distributed / Add-on video port.

Thank you for your post. I have been looking for some recommendation on a scpecific graphics card which works with the Poweredge T110 II server.

Dell has absolutely no knowledge of a graphics card called 'Dell VT 5450'. They mentioned that the part number '54502GBPC' mentioned here is invalid. Can you please advise where you purchased this graphics card?

It looks to be a VisionTek VT-400746PC which appears to be the same as the

VisionTek 900356, e.g.

I hope it is the correct video card and works well with your PE T110 II.

Please post the results as well as any different identifiers on the video card.

Hello.. Yes, I got an opportunity to setup the card today and it worked like a charm. The bios setup changed automatically just like you mentioned. No issues so far and the installation was as simple as plug-and-play.. Thank you for the recommendation.

The following are the links to buy together with the technical details -

I am very glad it works for you.

Thanks very much for posting both the VisionTek and Dell part numbers,

especially the Dell part number.

when you say "...For several reasons (e.g. PCI bus power) it is challenging to install an add-on graphics card in Dell PowerEdge T110 II..." what are the other challenging reasons? I am currently running two video cards in one without any problems. One is a FirePro 2460 which consumes about 15W. I also run another FirePro 7800p which could draw 150 watts. Obviously the latter requires power directly from the power supply. Maybe the only reason I haven't shut down the stock (305w?) power supply is that I haven't load tested it.

I didn't have any BIOS problems installing either card. I actually have a SSD PCie card, a USB 3.0 card, extra (low voltage) memory and a second hard drive in the machine, although I got a pretty low power Xeon CPU.

Are there utilities that will show the power supply wattage draw for this chipset while in use?

If I really did want to upgrade the power supply are there higher wattage supplies for the T110 II? Do any of the other PowerEdge Supplies have the same pin out?

Yes, I realize I am way beyond the intended use of this machine.

What BIOS version are you running?

>>> what are the other challenging reasons?

In addition to the PCI x16 slot 25W power limitation...
* The PCIe x16 slot only provides x8 power
* The BIOS version might influence what cards work, e.g.
   http://level7systems.co.uk/en/dell_poweredge_t110_ii_and_pcie_video_card/

A word of caution, the Dell PowerEdge T110 II System Owner's Manual February 2011 Rev. A00 states:

"CAUTION: To ensure proper cooling, no more than two of the four expansion
cards can have a power consumption of greater than 15 W (up to 25 W maximum
each), not including the integrated storage controller card."

So it might be advisable to install an extra case fan in addition to a higher output power supply.

Thank you guys for posting these links - I just ordered PowerEdge T110 II, I will definitely buy the suggested card and will try the steps mentioned by you guys!

Can you let me know which OS you are running after installing this card? Windows 8.1 or Ubuntu? I plan to install both of them on the server, as I would be using it for multiple purposes.

Currently running Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS x64.

Going to switch back to Windows Server 2012 Foundation x64 in a couple of weeks and will post how well the VisionTek card works.

Side note: it might be challenging to install Windows 8, as Dell might only provide drivers that work with Windows Server versions.

Also, if this is for a Small Business, you might consider getting the Microsoft Action Pack which includes version of Windows Server, etc.
