Dell Poweredge 1750 - no bootable device
Hi, I am totally new to servers and have bought myself a second hand PE1750 off ebay so that I can learn how it all works.
It currently has no OS on it and the BIOS is still A06.
I have downloaded A12 and am trying to update the bios.
1) is it possible to update the BIOS from the BIOS?
2) I only have C: drive and CDROM in boot sequence list via F2 setup utility.
3)No bootable device found.
4) I have 1 logical drive configured
5) there is no option to boot from USB
can anyone help me get this up and running please?
Dave

Not from the "BIOS", per se ... but you can boot to an update utility to update the system firmware (including BIOS).
The 1750 does not support booting to USB. You will need to boot to CD/DVD (or PXE or floppy) for anything you intend to do.
You can use SUU (Server Update Utility):
http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=GHC9V&fileId=2731109500&osCode=WNET&productCode=poweredge-1750&languageCode=EN&categoryId=SM
Which requires first booting to SMTD (Systems Management Tools and Documentation):
http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=P8V4X
Or you can use Repository Manager:
http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=X5YK8
OR you can install an OS and update the system firmware from the OS.

ok so still no joy. made a bootable DVD with the ISO image on it, loaded the cd drive booted up - "no bootable device".
Any ideas?

Is it a DVD drive? DVD drives were NOT standard on 1750's.

ok this may be the issue.
I believe it is a cd drive now not DVD.
Hmmm... how do i load the OS without a dvd drive or a usb to boot from?
I have a dvd rw drive from a dell tower pc that I may be able to connect - is it worth it?

Network install is not an option. Would a dvd drive via usb work?

That may work. Some laptop DVD drives will work too.
Alternatives, neither are quick nor particularly easy:
- PXE booting (WDS) over the network
- WinPE installation over the network

"Should" work. You'll just need to take the drive out of the tray to put in the 1750's tray.
