Dell R710 CPU upgrade, lost all memory in slots "B"
Hi Everyone,
I upgraded the CPU in my R710 from X5506 to X5620 and since then when the server starts, it will show errors regarding to the memory in all used slots B and message, that slots are disabled. I tried to swap the memory between slots A and B, but the error message remains to complain about slots B. The BIOS shows, that I have both CPU in place, however memory seems to work only from Slot A.
Before the CPU upgrade, the BIOS could recognise all 48GB (12 x 4GB - 6 in each CPU slots, 1-4, 2-5, 6-3), but after the CPU upgrade only 24 GB visible. The ram is Samsung 8500R model.
I did upgrade the bios to the latest 6.6.0 version as well before I upgraded the CPU. I also did reset the NVRAM but no luck.
I have not tried to swap the two CPU from A to B, but I would assume, if the BIOS is able to recognise both, then they should be okay.
Has anyone seen similar issue?
Regards,
Zsolt

Zsoltv,
Likely the issue is that the motherboard in your R710 is the original version, and not the second release, which is required for Westmere processor support. If you private message me the svc tag I can confirm this.

Hi Chris,
Today, I swapped the two CPUs in the two slots and now it says that all "A" memory slots are disabled. So for me it sounds like something is wrong with the CPU. Before it was in slot B and all slot B memory got disabled. Now it is in A and all A memories are gone.
However, it is interesting that no other error message and the BIOS can identify both CPUs.

You might want to inspect the top (damaged components) and bottom (pads and components) of both CPUs to make sure they are OK. It is possible that one or more surface mount parts or pads were damaged somehow in transit.
I recently purchased (8) 10-core CPUs to upgrade a couple of R810s. When I received the package, I noticed that half of the chips had been damaged from bouncing against each other in the loose bubble wrap the seller had packed them in.

Zsoltv,
After researching the svc tag, the motherboard is indeed a first generation board. So it will not support the Westmere processors, where as motherboard part number XDX06, Y7JM4, or NC7TO do support them.
If you are concerned about the motherboard having an issue, you can test that it is still functional by reinstalling the original procs, if no error or loss of dimm visibility then you can be sure the problem lies with the new processors.
