Dell R720XD Stuck @ Initializing f/w when using internal USB

 Hi,

I have a brand new Samsung 32GB Fit flash drive in the internal USB slot.  I installed ESXi 6.7 to it.  Upon rebooting it seems to get stuck at "Initializing Firmware Interfaces".  I let it sit there for about 10 minutes while I researched what could be the issue.  One site mentioned removing the USB stick.  Did that, and it literally went on to the next step as I pulled the flash drive out.  So I threw it in the front USB slot.  ESXi loaded just fine.  Is there something special I need to do to get the internal USB to function like the other USB slots?

Thanks for any advice!

In case anyone stumbles on this thread, I didn't want to leave it open even though Dell never responded to my latest questions.  I did switch out the USB stick to a 2.0 version stick and it worked.  I'm not sure why internal USB is built to different specs than the external USB's.

Gallyjh,

The first thing is that the R720XD doesn't support USB 3.0, which is what the Samsung USB you have is. So I would start with trying another USB. Another thing is if the BIOS and iDrac are current and up to date, what are the current versions? I ask as this was addressed in some later BIOS updates.

Hope this helps.

Hi @DELL-Chris H

Thanks for the feedback.

Regarding versions:

# BIOS
     Version: 2.6.1

# iDrac
     Version : 2.52.52 (Build 12)
     License:  Enterprise
     IPMI Version: 2.00

Are those proper?

Regarding the supported USB ports versions.  I did some research and according to the technical specs, all the R720XD USB ports are 2.0, so logically it has me wondering why it works in the front panel, but not the internal USB.

USB peripherals are supported through the front, back, and internal USB ports. They are USB 2.0 compliant.

Also most Flash drives are still backwards compatible, if not all.  I've tested this drive on a strictly 2.0 USB port from another machine and it can read/write to it just fine.

Any further advice?
