Grounding a server rack through a UPS?

It is good habit to ground things, even more when you are specifically told to do so by the instruction manual: Dell is pretty clear that its PSU should be grounded to the rack. However that is of little help if the rack itsef isn't grounded. My question is: is the the ground connector on the Dell UPS connected to the ground of the electric outlet (i.e. can I ground the rack by connecting it to the ground hole on the UPS)? thanks.

Hmmm,  not sure about actual electrical code on this.   But all our racks are grounded to building / earth ground through a dedicated big ol green ground wire.    I think the electricians came back in after the racks were installed to do this.   It was a newly built dedicated computer / server room though.   I'd still at least consider having an electrician come in and really ground it if I were you.  Probably only take 1 hour labor.   Ground potential differences can create all sorts of head scratching oddities with servers, storage, and networking.

Thank you for your feedback. I think I might end up doing just that. Though grounding the rack through the UPS would have saved an extra wire (I have already too many).

Dell's rack-mounted UPS have a ground screw on the rear face. It is the typical green ground wire. If you are implementing REPO, Dell UPS have two REPO connections for cascading capabilities.

Thanks, I was just wondering if that was recommended.
