HHD to a USB connection

Is it possible to take the HHD out of a PowerEdge 2970 (Savvio 10K.3 HHD) and connect some way to a USB? The server die and I just need to get some information off of it.

Hello

If the drive was connected to a RAID controller and was part of a virtual disk, like a single drive RAID 0, then it would be best to connect it back to the same type of RAID controller. If it was connected to something that was just acting as pass-through then yes, you should be able to read the data from an external USB enclosure that supports the drive type.

Thanks

Thanks for responding Daniel,

I don't think it is RAID Controller, but not positive. It is the PowerEdge 2970  Service Tag : and Out of Warranty. I am hoping to pull the first HDD out and plug it onto a cable with a USB and read the info on my laptop. I bought this cable in that hopes.

USB 3.0 SATA III Hard Drive Adapter Cable for 2.5 Inch SSD & HDD with Support UASP-20cm, BlackAny chance you would know if it will work?

Thanks again for taking your time to help me.

The system was sold with a PERC6i. That controller is not capable of pass-through, so if you are using that controller the drive is a member of a virtual disk. If it is in a single drive RAID 0 then you may be able to read the information from the drive by connecting it to a pass-through controller, but if any writes are made it will likely corrupt the virtual disk. Anything other than a single drive RAID 0 or possibly a broken RAID 1 and it is unlikely a pass-through controller will be able to read the data.
