How can I add a regular PCI sound card in 600SC?
Hi,
We just purchased this new PowerEdge 600SC and found that it came with a different kind of PCI slot (PCI-X? maybe) with the "key" in the slot close to the plate (opposite of the normal).
Just wondering how can we put a sound card in the box? We need a sound card for some programs.
Thank you very much.

The PCI slots in the PowerEdge 600 SC are all 3.3 volt slots which is the reason for being keyed differently.
Dell does not officially support sound cards in PowerEdge Servers. However, if you can find a sound card compatible with the 3.3 volt PCI slots, it should work.

The Creative Audigy card (top) has the second notch and should work.
The Live card below does not.

Is PCI 2.1 the same as 3.3v?

I have this SBLive 5.1 and it works with 600SC as well; Audigy is way too overkill for what I need. There are many of these cards for auction on Ebay. But be careful as not all SBLive are 3.3V compatible (look for the front gap near the connector end of the PCI card; my very first SBLive card does not)

All,
I just purchased a 1600SC server for audio production and this thread has me worried! Can I install my special audio cards (Ensoniq EDS-1000) into this system. The documentation says these are 5v cards and I need space for three of them. They DO NOT HAVE the special little tooth at the front.....
Does this thread only apply to the 600SC?
Thanks,
Aaron

I also added the sound blaster live 5.1 card and it works like a champ.
Anybody have any luck with the ATI All-In-Wonder VE card?
Cheers,

Hi Aaron,
The PowerEdge 1600 SC does have 2, 32bit/33Mhz, 5 volt PCI slots (The PowerEdge 600 SC does not have any 5 volt slots).
I cannot confirm if the Ensoniq card will work properly, but at least I can confirm it is compatible with the slot.
Thanks for using the Dell Community Forums

Hi!
I just got a 600SC and took your advise and got a PCI Monster Mx300, but I tried all the slots and the server wouldn't even power up. I am left with the unenviable choice between SB audigy or the extigy. Anything else I can try with the Monster MX300 card or other Aureal vortex 2 cards before I shell out the bucks for a SB? Man, the money I save with this server is put back into trying out different sound cards that will work with it.

I just found this place to buy the sound card rgl mentioned. It looks the same as the one posted by rgl. Can someone confirm that they're indeed the same?

Hello,
I was wondering if I could get a quick clarification about these PowerEdge 600SC PCI slots. Are they PCI 2.0, 2.1, 2.2? Are they also refered to as 2.1 busmaster PCI slots? Can I assume all 3.3 V PCI cards will be compatable? Is the main physical difference between the 5.5 V and 3.3 V cards fact that the 3.3 V cards have three tab connector rather than two or are the cards with the three tabs compatable with the 3.3 and 5 V versions?
I'm looking at sound cards from RME. http://www.rme-audio.de/english/hdsp/hdsp9652.htm#MANUFACTURERS They say that their cards are 3.3 Volt, PCI 2.1 busmaster interface. The picture looks to be the right connector. Any opinions?
Thanks, Craig

Craig,
I don't know all of the answer about the slots but the RME card looks like it will fit and is a 3.3 V card.
BTW, I see that you are going to use this for audio production. I am also doing this and it would be interesting for us to comapre notes on how we get our servers working. I bought a 1600SC but there should be too many differences. My email is
