How to extend storage of PowerEdge 2950

Hi all,

I would like to ask you what components would you suggest for extending storage on existing PE2950.

My vision is to put new case into rack that will be full of disk with just some electronics like SAS/SATA backplane. Then connect it via some bus to the existing server that runs OS with LVM/RAID and just include those devices  into the existing setup.

My guess was I would need some SAS/SATA expander for that, probably in form of riser cards.

Is there any way to compute maximum capacity of the server regarding connected hard drives? E.g. with full card updates how many disks could I connect this way?

If there are any information that are crucial and I messed them, I'm happy to look for them.

Thanks for any ideas,

Marek

Marek,

What you will need with it being a 2950 is the Perc 6E controller (part number 341-5898)

It will allow you to connect up to 3 storage units to the system externally.

Let me know if this answers your question, or if you have any further.

Thanks.
