Hello ETTRINGITE99

ftp.dell.com times out at different stages due to network problems

Sorry about the issues.

I've downloaded the Dell bios update package from the Dell support website for Windows Server 2008 R2, however according to Windows, this file isn't compatible with Server 2008 R2.

Here is the download list for the R610 BIOS:  http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDetails/DriverFileFormats/Product/poweredge-r610?DriverId=93WDP&FileId=2998043752&urlProductCode=False

The packaged version should run within any version of Windows supported on this server. The non-packaged version will only run within DOS even though it is an exe file.

I've tried the download iso OM_710_SUU_A00.iso at 4.5GB, which  I discovered isn't bootable :-(

The SUU is a repository. You can direct the lifecycle controller to the SUU instead of ftp.dell.com. Make sure you read the instructions on how to combine the ISO files.

I've downloaded the Dell repository manager, but don't really know how to use it for downloading drivers and bios updates. Should these files be downloaded, then burnt to an iso or something else?

Repository manager is a program that allows you to create custom repositories. It works the same as the SUU.

I would recommend that you try the non-packaged version or direct the LCC to the SUU instead of the FTP site since you are having connection issues.

Thanks

This is the process I use on the M610 blades:

Download the Dell Server Update Utility DVD .iso from the Dell website.  Usually you need to download this as 3 separate files and then link them together.  The files should have a suffix of .iso.001, .iso.002, and .iso.003 respectively.

At the time of writing you could download these DVD iso parts from here:

When you have downloaded all 3 files you can concatenate them using this command:

copy /b OM65* OM_650_SUU_A00.iso

Once you have the .iso ready, launch a remote console session to the target server blade.  You can do this via the chassis CMC or from the server iDRAC.

From the remote console attach the .iso as a virtual media using the menu at the top of the console window, and re-boot the server.

During boot up hit F10 when prompted to load the built in System Services utility.

If the System Services utility is disabled hit CTRL-E when prompted to enter system settings and re-enable it.

When the utility is loaded (takes AGES) select the ‘Platform Update’ option on the left and then select the ‘Launch Platform Updated’ option on the right.

In the Platform update screen select the ‘Local Drive’ radio button and then select Next.  Ensure that the .iso file is selected as the local drive source and select Next again (leave the catalogue location field blank).

In the following updates screen select all components that you wish to update.  Any components that have updates available are selected by default, so you can just go with that and hit Apply.

Updates will take some time and may require a number of reboots.

The process is complete when you can follow the last few steps above and see no more updates checked in the available updates list.

When all updates are complete disconnect the virtual media and boot the server to it’s normal operating system or return it to what ever state it was in before.

Dell-Daniel,

Here is the download list for the R610 BIOS:  www.dell.com/.../poweredge-r610

Thanks, I'll give that a go.

Bullfr0g,

At the time of writing you could download these DVD iso parts from here:

www.dell.com/.../DriverDetails

Link is broken :-(

I've tried using your suggestion and pointing the platform update utility at the ISO virtual media (OM_710_SUU_A00.iso, 4.5GB - the actual file name when downloaded is SSU_DVD_7.1.0.0-107), but the platform update manager complains this isn't a valid repository.

Have I got the right ISO? Do I really need to download the 3 separate files and combine them? I though the 4.5GB ISO was a concatenation of the smaller files anyway.

Many thanks for the help guys :-)

For something as routine as system updates, this does seem like an unreasonably painful experience!

Yes, you have to combine the 3 ISOs. One single ISO by itself is an incomplete file. That is likely the reason it is not recognized as a valid repository.

Thanks

Hello fxtracking

We have an internal knowledge base article about this exact issue. It states that the error message can be ignored. It does not stop the BIOS from updating. The error message is supposed to have been corrected in a lifecycle controller update in Q3 of 2011, so if you have a newer version of the LCE then you will not receive the error. If you are running an older version of the LCE then you can ignore the error.

Thanks

Hi Rey

Update by SSU_DVD_7.1.0.0-107 (4.6GB) still error by mismatch BiosWrapper.efi and countdown to restart.

After restart, i found error like this below.

After that i upplug AC power supply 1 minute for boot up again. Version nothing change.

i test again by update other, such as iDrac. It display error by mismatch iDracWrapper.efi, countdown to restart and display error again.

==========

So, now i can updated Bios to version 6.3 by create USB bootable drive and copy R610 biso update utility (R610-060300C.exe) into USB.

Boot to DOS and run them. Just do follow step to end. Restart and i see bios is up to version 6.3.

i don't know why update by SSU_DVD_7.1.0.0-107 will not success. Someone can confirm this solution?

Thanks

The issue is that you have attached an HP monitor to the Dell server, and the server doesnt like that.

just kidding :)

Since you are using the SUU via the lifecycle controller, you have encountered a situation that exists on all 11G systems. basically, if you try to use updates via the LifeCycle controller (LC) (any updates, not just SUU), it will fail if the idrac firmware is earlier than v1.85 AND the LifeCycle controller firmware is earlier than 1.5.2. The solution is to upgrade the idrac and LC firmwares to the latest version, but it must be done outside of the LC.

I recommend using Repository Manager to create a bootable iso, which will update everything in one shot. In the future, the LC will do it all with SUU or any other update packages.

The link below has information on downloading RM and the second video details how to create the bootable iso.

This is an old thread but I am just now having issues upgrading the BIOS of an R610 myself. Rather than start a new thread I thought I'd just add to this one.

I went to upgrade my server to 5680 CPU's. When I did, I accidentally damaged one of the CPU sockets. I ordered a replacement motherboard. Installed the CPU's and off to the races. Upon booting, I see the service number of the previous server this board resided in. I also noticed the BIOS was at v2.2.10. WAY old.

Trying to upgrade to 6.4 utilizing a jump drive (the server was set up as an ESXi unit and does not have Windows) I was met with the message that BIOS for a Dell R610 cannot be loaded to a "_" server. The board doesn't even know what it is.

HOW can I set the system type and is it possible to change the service tag to fit my box?
