IDRAC 8 on R730 - creating Virtual Disk fails immediately

Hi;

Having an issue where I'm trying to re-create a RAID 5 virtual disk on R730 (PERC H730P Mini) via iDRAC.    There's already a virtual disk (for a C: drive) I created as RAID1 with disks of another size.  I've rebooted/re-tried several times, but no luck. It fails immediately.    I don't have a great deal of experience with iDRAC, as almost all of our environment is HP.   It's strange, as I had already created it successfully once, but then realized I wanted a hot spare, so I deleted it and rebooted the server.  I've come to understand that "jobs" take quite a while within iDRAC, but this was a couple of days ago.   Anyway,  I name it, select RAID 5,  go down and select some available disks and hit Create. It fails immediately.  I know I can also probably do this from the Life Cycle Controller, but I'd like to know why this might be occurring.  Thanks.

BIOS ver  2.5.5

FW ver   2.50.50.50

Another thing:  Why does the "if ANY modifications are applied, the virtual disk configuration is lost on ALL the virtual disks in the systems" message come up, if in fact this controller is supposed to support multiple arrays? That's really annoying.

Hello

You can review the LifeCycle/iDRAC log, hardware/system event log, and pull a controller/TTY log. Those logs may have more information about what is happening. You can also review the job queue.

I think you can also enter the controller BIOS via CTL R with the H730. You might also be able to enter it through the LCC. You can try creating the virtual disk directly through the controller BIOS.

PERC H730P Mini:     Need clarification on whether this RAID controller supports multiple arrays.  It doesn't seem to.

I have a R730 Server with 2 x 300GB, and 5 x 600GB drives in it .

I want to create a RAID1 C: drive, and a RAID5 D: drive.

If I create the RAID1 array, when I go to create the RAID5 array,  the "if ANY modifications are applied, the virtual disk configuration is lost on ALL the virtual disks in the system" message comes up, and it wipes everything out.  This is both through DRAC, and through LifeCycle Controller.

Am I missing something here?       Thanks.

Don't create multiple threads on the same issue.

Yes, the H730 supports several virtual disks. The H730 is the only PERC I can think of that supports switching between various RAID and pass-through modes. If you are changing the operational mode of the controller or any other controller wide setting then it will affect all disks.

If you are using the OS deployment feature to create the virtual disk then that may be the issue. I think it only allows the creation of a single virtual disk for the purpose of deployment. If you modify the virtual disk it will overwrite the previous configuration. If that is what you are doing then just create the virtual disk you are wanting to install the OS on, create the other one after the install is complete.
