Installing and using PE1500SC as a home PC

Hi

I am new to this forum and completely new to servers, so please bear over with me if I ask silly questions .

I recently got a Dell Power Edge 1500SC server from my boss who bought a new server. Apparently it has a 17 GB Fujitsu MAM3184MC SCSI disk (firmware 5A01) and a Adaptec AIC7899 SCSI host adapter. And then it is telling me about a "Dell 1x6 U2W SCSI BP" on the SCSI disk list (is it the cdrom?).

Now, I wanted to use this machine as a home PC (with windows XP f.ex.), and from what I heard from the owners there was no problem with that.
I also got a 137 GB Hitachi HUS103014FL3800 brand new SCSI disk to install on the machine.

SInce I used to enable cdrom boot in Bios on the usual PCs for installing new OSes, I tried to do the same here (installing windows / Linux), but apparently the system does not see the CDrom.
In the bios boot sequence option there is no CDrom in the boot list; Its only three lines; Diskette drive A:, Hard drive C: and MBA UNDI (Bus0 Slot6) (network boot?).

What ever I do I can´t fint the cdrom to boot.

What should I do?

My boss told (who is as blank as me in servers) told me to try setting RAID off, but there is no option for that in the bios under integrated devices.

He also told me about the F6 button in connection with the above option - when and where do we use that?

In general; how do I proceed when I want to install the usual Windows XP on this kind of system?

Thanks in advance.

Previously, I tried to help someone here try to install XP on a server.  I don't think they ever got it fully working.  You might consider installing Ubuntu instead.  The server edition is documented here.  I couldn't find a direct reference to the 1500sc but you can check compatibility with the components here.

Another distro to try is CentOS derived from Red Hat Linux.  One of the RH distributions supported the 1500sc so I'd suspect that might work on the server.

This is all assuming you don't want to run a server version of Windows.

Have you tried booting the server with the cd in the cd rom drive??
All of my servers are older but when ever i have a cd that is bootable in the cd rom it tries to boot from it. "about a "Dell 1x6 U2W SCSI BP" on the SCSI " this is the scsi backplane that the hard drives connect into. It takes care of powering the drives, addressing and termination duties, it also provides data connection to the mother board.

According to the manual you have 2 scsi connections. It should list both when it is posting, check in the bios to make sure both are enabled.

I also use mine mostly as work stations, but i hope to have one set up as a game server and one as a file server soon. I currently run W2K on them. It automatically sets up for dual procs and loads just fine.

You only need to press F6 when you need to load a driver for a raid card, if you are not going to use raid then there is no need to press F6, it will load the scsi driver automatically.
