Intergrated Raid hardware Key
Hi Everyone,
I have Just received a PE4400 and i have a few questions that i have not been able to find on these forums.
The first one is:
What exactly does it mean if i do not have a Raid hardware key that fits into the motherboard. I have a PERC 2 with 128mb card and plan on getting some hard drives to configure it as a Raid 5. Will that be enough for what i want to do.
Does anyone know of any other sites that i might find addition hardware for this server other then the Dell site? Looking to upgrade the processor since it is a single 667mhz
That is all i can think of for now. I am sure i will have many more questions in the future.
Kenn

Hi, Kenn.
The RAID key you are referencing is nothing more than a small circuit board that, when plugged into the motherboard along with the appropriate RAID memory DIMM, enables the system's embedded PERC3/DI RAID controller for use. The embedded RAID controller will not be able to function if this key is missing. Below is a link to documentation for your system that explains the process of adding the RAID key and enabling the onboard RAID controller:
http://docs.us.dell.com/docs/systems/pe4400/en/perc3di/8648rbk0.pdf
If you are indicating that you already have a PCI RAID controller card, such as the Adaptec PERC2 4-channel controller card, then there is no need to worry about activating the system's embedded controller via the key. You can use PCI RAID controller cards as normal, regardless of whether or not the embedded controller is activated.
As to your second question, perhaps someone else may be able to point you to an alternative site for compatible parts. Please keep in mind, however, that we cannot guarantee the proper operation of parts purchased through a third-party retailer. Also, in most cases, parts purchased through Dell carry the warranty of the server for which they are purchased.
