Loud fan noise

Hello,

I am prepairing new Dell t430 server with two cpu utins. When srever starts fan noise is normal, but when I plug in PCIe Intell P3500 nvme ssd fans ramp up and is very loud. All frimware and bios are upgraded to the most recent ones. How to reduce fan speed?

Problem was solved with lifecycle controler update 2.40.40. All fans behave normaly now.

Hello.

The T430 does not support GPU cards. Once these 3rd party PCIe cards are detected, the system's fan speed will automatically increase as you have observed. This is the same issue with other Dell 13th generation servers with 3rd part PCIe cards installed. See another related thread on the same issue: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/servers/f/956/t/19682822

I ran these commands:

ipmitool.exe -I lanplus -U root -P calvin -H 192.168.192.168 raw 0x30 0x30 0x01 0x00

ipmitool.exe -I lanplus -U root -P calvin -H 192.168.192.168 raw 0x30 0x30 0x02 0xff 0x46

But I get error:

Error: Unable to establish IPMI v2 / RMCP+ session
Unable to send RAW command (channel=0x0 netfn=0x30 lun=0x0 cmd=0x30)

I managed to run these commands but nothing has changed, fans still run at 85%. Maybe I am using bad raw command if so can you give me correct one?

Not all PCIe cards trigger this fans; response. The Intel 750 Series PCIE SSD may be supported. It is possible that fans' RPM  is high for need of extra cooling due to fully populated hard drives, memory and other system needs. If this is the case, then disabling this feature may not have an effect. Otherwise, try running this other command: ipmitool -I lanplus -H -U -P raw 0x30 0xce 0x00 0x16 0x05 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x05 0x00 0x01 0x00 0x00

Command that you gave did not solve the problem, system fan still runs at 85% speed. Syestem uses 4 ram slots(4x16GB), 2 cpu slots, 2 hdd slots, 2 pcie slots.

This configuration may nit be responsible for 85% of the fans' RPM. Do you have the BMC Utility installed in order to run the IPMI commands? See this thread for additional information: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/servers/f/956/t/19992024

I have bmc  utility instaled on my windows machine. I  can connect  to  server. I used thread  to check status

"and here is the command to check the status.

raw 0x30 0xce 0x01 0x16 0x05 0x00 0x00 0x00"

I  get 16 05 00 00 00 05 00 01 00 00

I spotted one thing. When i run bmc comand

ipmitool -I lanplus -H 192.168.192.168 -U root -P calvin raw 0x30 0xce 0x00 0x16 0x05 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x05 0x00 0x01 0x00 0x00

On iDrac I can see that fan rmp changed from 10080 to 4200, but fans spin at the same speed (85%). Is that raw command universal, if no then maybe I need another command?

There is certainly a relationship between fans' RPM and overall speed %. What about the current noise level? Consider applying BIOS and iDRAC firmware update if required. The command is applicable to all 13G servers with default fan response to third party PCIe cards.

Fan noise, nor speed have not changed,  just numbers that  idrac shows are lower. I applied bios 2.2.5  and  idrac 2.30.30 updates. Maybe I have faulty fan or motherboard? Temps are max 42 C.

Do you have fans from another similar system to test with?

But why it behaves normaly with pcie Intel 750 SSD. I do not think that fan is faulty.
