Memory Upgrade on PowerEdge 2900
I currently have four 1GB sticks in the server. I am installing four 4 GB sticks today. Can I use the 1GB sticks as well taking my system to 20GB? If so, which slots should I place the 1GB sticks into? They are currently in slots 1, 2, 3, and 4 (which is where I assume I should put my new 4GB sticks).

There are several rules to populating memory on a 2900/2950, as outlined in the Owner's Manual:
Yes, you can use your 1GB sticks too - here is how you want to populate the memory:
Numbered Slot on the Board
1 - 4GB (first slot - white tab)
2 - 4GB (fourth slot - white tab)
3 - 4GB (seventh slot - white tab)
4 - 4GB (tenth slot - white tab)
5 - 1GB (second slot)
6 - 1GB (fifth slot)
7 - 1GB (eighth slot)
8 - 1GB (eleventh slot)
Make sure your new memory meets the specifications required by the 2900.

Usually memory needs to be installed in matching pairs. Although it is not optimal, single-DIMM configurations will often be allowed, however, mixing DIMM's will usually give you an error or warning about mismatched/invalid memory configurations.
I would just use 2x2GB and 2x1GB DIMM's for 6GB.

Never mind. One of the 1GB sticks was not seated properly. It is okay now. Phew!

A corrollary: I also have a PowerEdge 1800 that currently has three 1GB sticks, with a total of six memory slots. Can I combine these three 1GB sticks with three 2GB sticks and make a total of 9GB? I am not asking if 3+6=9 but if these memory sticks can be used together. Thanks.

OOPS! Just installed the new memory. It actually came as eight 2GB sticks. I placed these eight 2GB sticks in slots 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 and the four 1GB sticks in slots 9,10,11,12. The PowerEdge LED window on front says, "E2011 Mem Config Err." Any idea what might be the issue? Thanks for the help.
