NAS4Free setup on R710 newbie questions on RAM and other

Good morning everyone.

I am looking to set up home server using NAS4Free for mostly file sharing (photos, music, video, documents). Not looking to do anything too fancy. I have windows, apple, and Ubuntu machines at home.

Had a question on RAM. I currently have 12Gb of UDimm. I also have 32Gb of RDimm lying around. I know they can not be mixed and matched. Is there any advantage of using one setup over the other?

The R710 I have for this is a single quad processor machine. Here are the specs:

One Xeon X5677, 3.46Ghz, 12M Cache, 1333Mhz
Dual 570W power supplies
12GB (6x2Gb), 1333Mhz UDIMMs (I believe I have 32GB of RDIMM)
All firmware has been updated.
No RAID controller (hoping to do software RAID)

Loaded up the OS on the internal USB drive and seems to be working fine. In the process of configuring the software RAID but need to do more reading.

Thank you.

Also, is there a better file system for the R710, I am looking at ZFS, but UFS is also option.

(what is up with the Captcha test. Is it normal to have to do it 10 times????)
